I’ve been looking for an inexpensive truck for a while to replace my wife’s deteriorating ‘15 Ram 1500 and I’ve asked the sales managers at work to keep an eye out and consideration for something that would wholesale otherwise. They haven’t had much, but today had a service customer sell his truck for $100 because it needs a transmission and he didn’t have a way to get it home. It’s a 2012 Sierra 1500 that is pretty close to immaculate but does have 230k miles. Transmission mechanic that worked on it, said the truck was worth putting money in. My cost for the truck is $600, and the local value for such truck is in the $8-10k range on the high end so I could spend some money and still be okay.

My cost for a GM transmission across the parts counter is $4200
Monster Transmission is $2500
Used is $1500ish locally thru Fenix

Are there any other rebuilders that anyone has used?

I’ve always rebuilt my own after as a young man, getting junk yard transmissions and having those fail also it pretty much sucked. It’s a big learning curve and intimidating but worth it in the long run, no more failures. I’ve rebuilt several for family and friends also. Not doing that anymore unless I have to for myself again.

I am going to try Jasper Engines & Transmissions.
My favorite mechanic said they were decent and would install it for me.

Jasper is at the top of my list, except that being a dealer; we are not a Jasper dealer and they won’t ship to a non installer.

I did buy the truck. I’m still searching for transmissions. Monsters out. Lead times all over the place. I really want to own the truck for around $5k and it has a couple oil leaks to take care of as well. I’ll probably pay the shop to have the transmission guy do it as I don’t have enough free time to do it, and he’s very good and trustworthy.. we’re basically allowed 5 hours on our day off weekend ( shops open 8-1 Saturdays ) where we work every other Saturday. I can’t fit that into 5 hours.

True. LKQ brings us transmissions when one of the warranty companies calls out their own parts and they always have them drop shipped from LKQ

Well I have a predicament. I thought the monitors were ready on the truck for inspection as that would have meant that I could have stickered it just so sales could finish up the ‘deal’ and deliver it, putting it free and clear into my name. I plugged it into my cheap reader today that checks monitors, and it’s recently been cleared, probably previous owner trying to reset the transmission or something. There are no permanent codes which there would be if it had emissions issues. Sales needs the deal done by the end of November, so I either back out or I get a used transmission from LKQ, and I might as well buy the matching lower mileage transfer case for $141. Used because it’s in stock with no lead time, and then get it going, because I have to drive it 50 miles to clear the monitors

I have an '08 Silverado, 100,000 +, purchased new. be aware of AFM issues. Ticking noises, for one. Google it.
Low oil pressures, can be a simple clogged screen in the pressure sensor. Low oil pressure can contribute to AFM issues.
Double check what codes were cleared if possible.

I've replaced a minor seeping high pressure steering hose, front/rear shocks, stabilizer bushings. Sometimes I can't tell if the engine is running at a stop light. I think it was built on a Wednesday 😁

I work for a Chevy dealer so I’m well aware of AFM problems and the transmission issues. I actually passed on a ‘08 that had the tick and a dead miss which I knew was a lifter issue and being unknown how long it ran, probably destroyed the camshaft. That truck was $2k and not in as good of shape.. this truck runs near perfect. Not a shake or rattle.
If I plug my bi directional scanner in it, it should show what codes were there but my guess is transmission codes.. the only thing I can pretty much guarantee is that it has no emissions problems that will prevent inspection from passing, since they always generate a permanent code which takes 2 cycles to clear. The transmission has a pump issue as it has the pump whine and then it looses line pressure and finds the neutrals. It drives enough to move it around

Well I ordered the trans and T case. Little under $2,300 shipped for both to my work.

I also checked the RPO codes on it, and it’s near fully loaded. Has remote start and a few other things.

Just out of curiosity. What constitutes a low mileage transmission?

I’m really not sure. LKQ has markers for low mileage parts. They had a transmission listed at 126k miles as low mileage and quite a premium. I got one with 141k for $500 less. I don’t know what their cutoff is

I forgot to update this. Trans and transmission came roughly 1.5 days after ordering. I’ve got it on the schedule to put it in next Friday. Cutting it close, and I’ll actually have to pay for my labor but it’ll be worth it I think. The truck on paper is worth $9k, and I won’t have $5k in it
