I have a completely refurbished 1957 Johnson 35HP Big Twin motor that runs great but has no wiring harness and must be converted to electric start. I have had problems finding anything needed but the flywheel, which I have obtained. The wiring harness and the starter motor have eluded me. Today, I found a great deal on an electric start 1966 Johnson 40HP Super Seahorse that runs/looks great and has a wiring harness included for $500.
$64,000 question: All things considered, should I buy the 40 horse newer motor and sell the big twin, or continue to search for those elusive parts?

Any advice would be appreciated...

Worked on many of those 66 model 40 hp motors.--------If it is properly maintained and it good condition it is the better motor of the 2 models.

You can build your own wiring harness for the 57. They are very simple. Starters are available all over the place at about $100 dollars a pop, add to that the starter solenoid and starter button and overall it should come up to (give or take)$150.But you can probably sell the '57 for about $350. In the end it all boils down to the individual condition of the engines and your personal preference.
