Deck and Transom help??

I plan on ripping the floor out of my 1982 Galaxy. It had some soft spots and I pulled the carpet to reveal rot! I also may go ahead and replace the transom. It looks as if the PO tried to once before because there is a steel plate in between a crappy fiberglass job and the motor. I have been reading a TON of info for the past 5 or 6 months, but I still have some final questions before I get too deep.

100_4528 resized.jpg100_4532 resized.jpg100_4529 resized.jpg
  1. My cap is held on by rivets. After I drill them out, what should I replace them with? More rivets in same holes or screws in different holes?
  2. When I rip up old decking, should I leave a lip so I can butt up my new deck and glass over them? If not, how far to the edge should I go? There is a ?step? that creates like a storage space that runs along the sides. Should I rip to that? Or tear it out and just create a new storage space?
    100_4533 resized.jpg
  3. When I do get ready to glass, I am gonna lay everything out beforehand. What is the best way to enclose the decking in glass? Is coating it in resin and letting it dry then laying csm good enough? I have seen diagrams on it, I know that it is CSM, ply, CSM, 1708 tabbing, then 2 more layers of CSM but what about the sides. And if I am laying carpet back down, is all of that required?

I was planning on ordering glassing stuff soon because the weather is decent and I am hoping to finish the deck soon. I don?t wanna get anyone in trouble but where is a good place to order from? The best I have found so far is US Composites.
My deck is 6?x12? (ballpark). Tell me if this sounds good:
    EPOX-635414 ? 2 gal of epoxy w/ ? gal hardener.
    18 yrds 1.5 CSM
    2 yrds 1708 Biaxial
    =~$186

I am sure I will have a bunch more questions but until then, I will be religiously reading Oops!, Friscoboater, Woodonglass, and all of the other awesome restoration threads!!

Once I get more in depth, I will proably create a restoration thread.

    Thanks in advanced!!!

Re: Deck and Transom help??

hi bud......welcome to iboats !

glad you are doing your homework here.....

but you are in a special situation and need a bit of help...

first off......you are kinda going down a road that is not correct.

ok.....lets clear that up.....

if you are using epoxy.....NO csm is needed. just a knit fabric like woven roving or 1708.

if you are using poly (it appears you arent) the the csm is needed.

ok......now for pulling the cap.......forget it....aint gonna happen.

the PO foamed under the deck for some strange reason.... the cap is now glued to the hull......if you really want it off you will need to climb in to the bow and tear out the foam where it is contacting the cap.....or it wont come off. (that was a really bad move to foam that area...it looks like carp)

ok.....the reevits (normaly it is spelled and pronounced rivets....but due to local iboats jargon....they are now referred to as reevits).

it is your choice if you reevit the cap back on or put bolts in the cap thru the same holes....standard bolts work great...but you need 2 people to do it.

that shelf you are talking about.....if its under the glass in pic 4.....if the wood aint rotten...leave it.

you were also asking about the sides.....im guessing that you are asking if you need fibreglass up the sides of your boat....as in all the way up the sides.
the answer is no......the tabbing from the deck goes 6-8 inches up the hull.....no more is necessary. then just carpet over all the glass.

im going to give you a link on how to replace a deck.......the link assumes you are going to use polyester resin.......epoxy is a different lay up schedule.

if you are going to continue with your choice of epoxy.....i can give you a different lay up schedule, to go along with the epoxy.

hope that clears up some stuff bud.??

cheers

Re: Deck and Transom help??

I don't want to open up another debate thread, but i was looking at the differences in the resins. I have some fab work i want to do on the dash. I want to change the shape and look of it. I was thinking of using epoxy to do that with. So if use epoxy to do the deck, what would be the proper layup? If i do go with polyester resin, which type should i order from us composites? 700, 435, EB?? it is confusing!

I am gonna try to skip taking the top cap off. I am going to order the supplies before i go to bed hopefully!!

I am going to start pulling the deck up tonight. I have heard of people grinding the fiberglass down to the wood, the just ripping the wood up. Is that probably the best way to do it? i have a saw but i don't think that i can adjust the depth of the cut with it.

Re: Deck and Transom help??

if you go poly resin......the 435 standard lay up resin is the one to use.

if you go the epoxy route.....

the best cloth for you is 17 oz bi axe...it is the same as 1708...with no chopped strand on the back of it.
epoxy is not compatable with chopped strand matt.

if you are fabbing a new dash board.....epoxy is just way over kill.....harder to sand. and quite frankly, a waist of money.

click the link in my sig......there is a description on how i did mine in there.

as far as the tools...........most circular saws have an adjustable depth.....read the owners manual.....or.....with the saw un plugged. at the back of the cutting plate......there is a lever...lift it up, and move the cutting base. then lower the lever.

a chain saw is also good for the job.

forget about grinding off all the fiberglass on the deck and then cutting it out. it is a total waist of time my friend..you are going to throw away the deck....so why grind it?

when i know i am going to tear out a deck....i dont even pull up the carpet i just cut right thru it.....it saves me a step.

cut the deck about 3-4 inches away from the side of the boat all around the deck. and then just pull it up.

if you dont mind me saying so......it would be in your best intrestes to read the link in my signature.....i can tell by the questions you are asking that you need a little more study time.....if you dont study some more.. you will spend 5 times longer doing back breaking work then you need to.

if you read the first 16 pages in full....dont skip anything.....you will have enough info to KNOW that you can do it and how to do it..

in any case.......we are all here to help you all the way through this.

cheers bud

Re: Deck and Transom help??

I did A LOT of reading yesterday! I feel pretty confident, especially with the help of everyone one here but I second guess myself a lot. I also miss things after reading for hours at a time! I didn't know that poly resin was used with csm and epoxy with 1708. I thought that you could use either resins with all types. That is a HUGE piece of info that I overlooked. Thanks again for the help!

Re: Deck and Transom help??

Nope you don't use 1708 with epoxy. It has CSM Sewn onto the back of it. You only need 17oz biaxial cloth when using epoxy.

Re: Deck and Transom help??

yes.....the above is correct.

csm stitched or regular contains a "binder" that requires styrene to break it down......epoxy does not contain styrene. so no csm with epoxy...1708 has csm. 17 bi axe does not
