Folks,

Got boat flipped back over, ready for final prime and paint on the top side. I decided I didn't like the deck drains going through the side of the hull. Instead I routed them aft to the splashwell. Here are the pics before prime and paint. I used 3m 5200 to seal the drains with 1" drain tube and hose. I have not drilled the splash well scuppers yet, but I will.

Re: Deck Drains

what's going to keep water from coming back in? you might just put a good bilge pump in the splash well with a float switch.

Re: Deck Drains

Tashasdaddy,

The drain in the splash well is lower than the deck, also the splash well scupper should prevent backflow into the splash well. I don't know where the water line is going to be, it should be below the scupper in the splash well. There have been enough changes to the weight distibution, so I am unsure exactly how it will sit in the water.

Once I am in the water I will take a closer look, I may put a scupper flap on the drain in the splash well, which should also prevent back flow.

Thanks much for the comments.

Peace.

Ed.

Re: Deck Drains

I have a similar deck drain setup in my boat. I don't have scuppers on the splashwell drains right now, but I keep plugs in the holes as they are below the waterline at rest. If there gets to be some water in the splashwell, I'll pull the plugs while underway and everything drains out. I will be installing some of the ball-type scuppers soon as I have found the rubber-flap kind just don't seem to do the trick.

studlymandingo,

I have heard that about the flap type scupper, I have no personal experience, what are the ball type you speak of?

Never mind, did a search and found them, they look like just the ticket, seem to get good reviews.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Peace.

Ed.

TH Marine's ball scupper available at several boating supply places around Florida. Seen it at West Marine, TA Mahoney's and Boater's World.

Re: Deck Drains

Well Ed, your post inspired me. I installed these today. I will be testing them first thing in the morning and I will let you know how they function. They also had a bilge drain that uses the standard 1/2" brass plug; it has a ball inside of it as well, I suppose if you forget to install the drain plug.

Texasmark spoke of using one of these in place of a drain plug on older ski-boats. Supposedly it drains the bilge when underway and automatically plugs up when not. I think I'll see how they do for splashwell scuppers before I think of using one in place of a bilge drain.

Studly..., et. al.

Just got back from the boat store, yep about $10 each. I think they are just the ticket.

No charge for the inspiration Studly... :)

Thanks all, going out right now to continue efforts, really want to get in the water in July.

Peace.

Ed.

Re: Deck Drains

Just got back in from the water. The ball-type scuppers worked pretty well. They let a bit of water in the splashwell, not very much, but as soon as underway they drain right out. The flapper-type scuppers would continually seep water while stopped, the ball type will allow maybe a 1/2" in the very bottom of the splashwell. I like the way it works.

Studly....,

Thanks much for the info, how far below the waterline are your scuppers when you are at rest?

Thanks in advance.

Peace.

Ed.

Re: Deck Drains

You can see in the photo above...The bottom paint is almost exactly where the waterline is at rest. They are completely submerged about 6".

Re: Deck Drains

I have a buddy that has a Kenner VX with flap type scuppers. They do let in a bit of water over a day of being out on the water. The ball type scupper seems like it would provide a better seal that the flap.
