deck replacement -- what type of wood

I am replacing the 9 x 5 rear deck of river cruiser and figure I have to use teak. I would like to find salvaged wood, but am unsure of where to find that in Minnesota. Anyone know?<br /><br />At the risk of sounding like a fool: it would be really easy to get salvaged house wood flooring down the road from me. Does anyone have an input if this would work with the right sealer?<br /><br />I'm also considering the idea from another post of using Rhino lining . . .

Use Teak and Holly Plywood. Coat with 3 layers Epoxy and 3 layers Varnish.<br /><br />Cheap, good looking, durable.

Thanks for the tip, I checked it out and found some local dealers that sell teak ply. However, I'm curious about what you all think about my idea of using salvaged wood flooring planks. The area I would do is flat, and again, only about 9 x 5. I am mainly interested in doing this because I am trying as much as possible to use salvaged/reused materials to renovate the boat. It is less expensive too. Thanks for your input.

As long as you seal it right , should be fine.<br />Use 2-3 coats epoxy, then cover with 3-4 coats Varnish/Clearcoat. Epoxy breaks down under UV.<br /><br />Or you could just do 6-8 coats Varnish/clearcoat.<br />My only thinking is that old wood floors are pretty thick. Should be fine using them though.<br />Not "yachty" but practicality has a beauty of its own!

Thanks for the feed back, dinsdale. You're right -- not "yachty" at all, but I believe it will be the look and character I am seeking, and the end product will be beautiful -- although I'll post pictures and let all of you be the judges of that. I just want to make sure I'm doing it properly so it will hold up and last. . .

well, OLD style yachts had hardwood floors, the old Huckins and CrisCraft Commanders etc etc etc<br /><br />so its VERY yachty, and a great idea<br /><br />frugal too, gotta love that<br /><br />

sounds like a great idea to me.curious as to what the wood is though.i have origional cherry wood plank flooring in my home but have seen ash walnut and others.curiosity mainly but would give an idea of what the finished product will look like.and do you plan to sand the wood before you seal it?in this case i think i probably would since the wood is old and the indoor sealer likely wont holdup very well.good luck and ill be looking for those pics.

I will probably use cedar or mahogany -- both of which I can get at a salvaged wood place right down the street. I would definitely sand each piece down first before installing -- tedious but necessary. Thanks for the feedback.
