Deck: to replace this winter or not?

Ok so I have currently reached a crossroads in my boat saga. I have a 15.5 ft center console that I bought this past summer. The former owner had replaced a good portion of the floor, looks like he just did a patch job. The work is solid but I'm not sure if he did it exactly how it was supposed to be done. My question would be, what are some opinions about redoing the floor to make sure it is right, as I want this to be a reliable boat that I can use for a couple of years (I'm a freshman in college, and it's got to last me until I graduate, 4-6 years). My original plan was to paint over it but the guy really did a hack job on it so then I figured I could throw some carpet over it to hide the nasty work. Another big concern is the cost of redoing the floor and possibly foam and stringers. I know alot of you guys on here have done a lot of boats, so I figured I could get more accurate numbers here rather than trying to figure it up myself. So what is a reasonable cost to do a 15.5 ft, if I had redo from the stringers up? I really doubt I'll have the time or $ to do it this winter but knowing I will need to do it some time down the road will make a difference what I do this winter. Any help is greatly appreciated.:)

The first decision you have to make is on resin+wood+foam

Are you using poly or epoxy resin?

What kind of wood ext pt or marine?

2 or 4 lb foam?

Post that then we can get you some numbers.

Investigage your stringers and foam drill some holes and tell us what you have got.

I was going to say that you might not even be able to do it this winter...doesnt epoxy/resin have to be aove 65 or something to harden right?

I'm tearing up my deck right now...and I think if you want to do it "right" you need to paint the deck in resin to make it "waterproof"...then what Im going to do is lay cloth over mine to make it solid.

I was going to carpet mine but now i'm just goign to roll gel coat or non skip paint over it to have a nice easily washed waterproofed deck. much nicer than carpet IMHO

Well according to research I've been doing (mostly on here), epoxy is the best but I would probably use poly because of the cost issue, unless this is really unadvisable. Then I think I would go with ext pressure treated ply, I know it will have to be dryed, but I live in Florida so that shouldn't be a problem;). As far as foam, I know very little about, what are the pros/cons or 4lb vs 2lb? Thanks for the help.
P.S. Fuzzy, I have been following your thread, I think you're doing a great job.

Yeah, I live in FL so the time out of the year that it is actually below 65 is minimal but I don't think I'll be able to do it for other reasons like school and the fact that I have limited funds. But what can you do. I think I'm starting to lean towards the paint or gel coat like you because carpet could be a pita to put down just to tear it up in a few years.

$800 to $1000 and minimum 200 hrs labor......

that is a lot of time away from school studies bud.....and a lot of cash on a students income.....you can do it cheaper, if you purchase well....

we can and will help you.....but weigh the cost fully......if you get obsessed with the boat.....youll be thinking of it in class

Re: Deck: to replace this winter or not?

dont want to start an arguement about wood....but...

if you have the time to dry it....pressure treated wood is fantastic in a fiberglass boat.......

if you dont have the time and the cash....use ext grade ply......

i just finished a post giving the reasons in the hull ext thread

cheers

Yeah been meaning to post a few pics, maybe tomorrow :). Wow wasn't expecting for it to cost that much. But if thats what it costs to do it right, then that's that. Thanks for the insight. Will probably just end up painting it, and learn to live with it. Nice to know what it would take for future reference though. And by the way oops, I haven't even torn into it yet and I already spend my time in class thinking about everything I'd love to add to the boat, and surfing iboats :D. Appreciate all the help guys.

HAHA wait till you get a westmarine catalog...I spend EVERY hour lunch break at work planning things to buy for my boat and the main thing i still need to worry about is rebuilding my transom, replace stringers and reinforce my hull before getting any extra stuff!!! its addicting and money usually is in short supply ;)

It's an addiction we all share :D. Maybe we should start a group, boat owners anonymous ;).
