Having installed a depth finder on my 85 OMC I need some setup/play time with how it works.
I've been told not to leave the ignition on for an extended period of time but question is that 5 minutes or even less??

Thanks

I don't know your answer. But, why did you wire the depth finder into the ignition? Not a good idea, a depth finder should have its own power source. You might find that you will have interference with the motor running.

That is a variable that depends on your battery (s). Are they (it) fully charged?
shouldnt be an issue, just need to watch your volt meter

Ignition coils are intended to be pulsed (as in engine running).

Your depth finder can be wired to the accessory side of the switch. If your ignition doesn't have an accessory side, use an accessory switch

Thanks for the replies. As to why did I wire it this way is that I don't know how to wire it so it has it's own power source.

You found 12 volts with the key ON. Use the same process to find 12 volts with the key OFF. The best place to look is the fuse panel or directly to the battery as previously indicated.
