Delco alternator swap on Volvo

Hello,

My Volvo originally had a Paris Rhone alternator that was shot. I was able to buy a Delco (marine of course) alternator for less than half of what a Paris Rhone would cost. The Paris Rhone requires excitation for the coils while the Delco is self exciting. My question is does the Delco require special wiring that I may be unaware of? I know the terminal from the alternator goes to the battery but is there anything else??

Thanx for your help and have a great day,

Rob.

Re: Delco alternator swap on Volvo

My engine is an AQ131, 2.3 litre. The guy at the shop said that it will fit so that shouldn't be a problem. My concern is trying to get the wiring right so everything works.

Thanx in advance and have a great day,

Rob.

If it's a Delco 1 Wire,......

I believe that 1 Wire to the Big Lug on the Starter is All that's Needed......

Re: Delco alternator swap on Volvo

Thanx Bondo,

So basically just forget about the other wire, which I believe was just wired to ignition, for the field coil excitation, and the other wire is just a ground. That is what I originally thought, but somewhere I read that there was a little more than that. Like if it was wired up incorrectly the engine won't turn off, which is why I am asking something which appears to be a pretty simple question. My non OEM service manual is JUNK, it does not even have the correct wiring diagram. Yes Don S I know I should have bought the OEM one, but I bought this one a while ago. If anyone has a wiring diagram that they could send me it would be greatly appreciated. It is a 1992 AQ131, with a Paris Rhone alternator.

Thanx again,

Rob.

Does anyone else have an opinion on this??? Will be installing the engine this weekend and I want to make sure I hook up the alternator correctly.

Have a great day,

Re: Delco alternator swap on Volvo

I recently put one on my freinds volvo kad43p-a, it worked but the wiring was confusing at first, the two black grounds fit on the lug to groung and starter circuit will not work if not grounded right, the charge light goes to white and the tach wire to the black lug, the tach reads fast so I will have to wire in a trimable resistor under the dash to set for the difference in ac signal it receives as the delco is a higher amp output so the windings on the stator are more, big little since the volvo alt is soooo expensive, and the delco uses the same parts for the brush pack and int regulator as a chevy car or truck, word to the enviroment, take it apart and put marine grease on the brush pack wires so they wont corrode in two, I did have to rotate the back frame 90 deg to clear the motor mount and put the valeo pulley on it, the next thing I am doing is to put a galvanized sheet metal cover on it, the sea water filter dumps on it if you loose prime and have to manually reprime it, this is going to be the next puzzle, why did this pump work fine for 6 years and now is loosing prime, new cover plate and if I can find it the back wear washer?? any hints would be readily appreciated..MG. boat has 4000 hours on it in commercial service.:eek::confused:

Tape off the extra wires, the only issue is with the pivot boss hole, it needs to be drilled out bigger
