Delco Voyager M24MF as a starting battery?

I just bought this battery and now I'm wondering if I bought the right battery for what I need? I want to use it as a starting battery as well as to run my fish locator and boat lights. This is a deep cycle and the specs say its a starting/accessory battery. Some say I need a marine cranking only and others say the Delco deep cycle is what I need. Its for a 1985 48HP johnson outboard. Also is it big enough?

Thanks
Bob

If you are just running one depthfinder and bow and stern lights, you should be fine.

Yea thats what I'm doing. So is the Delco deep cycle ok to use as a starting battery? Some have told me they are not designed to take a charge from a outboard motor alternator and some say the new ones are.......thus I'm confused????

Would I be better off with the M27MF? Is it worth the extra kick?

WhereBob
The Delco Voyager group 24 will be fine for your boat.
Only problem with deep cycle batteries as starting batteries is sometimes they do not supply enough starting current. Deep cycle have thicker plates so do not have as many plates and can not generate as much current. The battery you have has enough current to start a 3.0L I/O (135 HP) or a 175 HP outboard and it will not even strain at all for a 50 HP outboard.

Get out on the water and enjoy.

Your battery should be rated for Cranking amps. What's it say? I use the Voyager group 27 for my 3.0 OMC cobra. It is rated for 720 CA or 550 CCA.

Just make sure your battery is fully charged before every use. Your alternator may not be strong enough to charge a moderately depleted battery with the heavier plates found in these hybrid deep cycle/starting batteries... unless you run your motor for hours at a time.
