Hello!
I have been fighting with my HDR600 Humminbird Dept Finder. Today when out it reads 450 feet as I was sitting on a sand bar. I pulled it out checked the wires and followed it back to the in hull transducer and all looks good. Should I just assume this thing is junk? Anything else I can try to fix it? The boat only has 35 hours on it so irritated that it was working fine and last time we where out it just started acting up. The ducer is mounted good and not loose either and have had not problems since owning the boat. If it is shot are there other brands out there that might be better. If I have to replace I rather get something that it of higher quality. Thanks Much!

Call Humminbird & describe your problem to them. Their customer service is excellent & they'll likely be able to point you in the right direction.

IN HULL TRANSDUCER there lies your problem..was it designed to be in hull and has it been mounted as per instructions with the righ adhesive and through the right hull material ?

Yes this is a very common depth finder for this style of boat (06 Stingray 185) and from everything I can tell it was install professionally by the Dealership in which the previouse owner purchased the boat new from. Its in the exact stop it should be right under the motor using a high grade epoxy. The thing is solid and worked just fine up until last week.

Learn how to turn the auto off. If it works in 20,50, 100 ft its not a ducer problem. You expect way to much out of a $200 Hummingchicken.

I will bet you turn the depth range to 10ft it reads 4ft just fine.

This confuses me?? Learn how to turn the auto off ?? What does that mean. The thing doesn't work at all it reads over 400 feet all of the time and haven't even had the boat in more then 30. There is not auto function its all or nothing the range just reads what it reads upt to a certain amount of feet that its rated for. I expect my Hummingchicken to work effectively is that so much to ask?

I don't know about the model you have but I have a LCR400ID and you turn the auto depth range off by scrolling through the menu. On mine, I think it's the last item, or next to last, on the menu.

Go to Hummingbird's website. The entire user manual for mine was there and I think it's about 17 years old. Don't know that for a fact but believe it came on the boat as original equipment.

Yeah I have read the manual a couple times and been on the Q&A on the website and was pretty pathetic to say the least. Took moi's advice and called them today and the lady put me on hold until after they closed and it cut me off. Pretty irritating and starting to think this is one crappy brand from all the other research I have done.

I don't know if turning the auto ranging feature off will work or not. I'm not real satisfied with mine but given the age, I can't complain. Maybe it never worked right. I've only owned it a few weeks. Just thought you could try manual ranging.

Deffinitly don't need a fish finder as I have no plans to fish on my boat and also don't need a big monster display but that does look like a nice one no doubt. Will probably end up calling them again today and complaining but will deffinitly not be buying another one. Probably will go with an Aria or a Hawkeye. THanks for the replies they are appreciated!!!

I got the Hawkeye D10D works fine at all speeds. You can get it for less than $100 online. Think I paid about $80 for mine.

It is just a depth finder with a digital display, no fish finding ability.

Thats perfect! Will most likely follow suit and do the same thing as Hummingbird sucks! Called again today and got some dumb lady that didn't even seem to know what a depth finder is not to mention I couldn't understand her. Can not give them business thats for sure!

If you are just looking for something to give you depth readings with nice big numbers, check out Furuno's RD-30. Sweet little unit and it can do a bunch of other things too.
