Just bought a 88' Four Winns 180 Horizon w/o a depth finder and I am looking for one. I am looking at a Garmin 160 and a Lowrance X65 and am wondering about the difference between a transom or through hull mount for my transducer. Which is best, why?

Re: Depth Finder ????

Wazzu
Some boat you can shoot thru hull and if you can then I would do that. This way do not have to drill any holes and since tranducer is inside boat do not have to worry about it hitting anything in the water. So check with your dealer to find out if can on your boat.

If can not shoot thru hull then I would go for the transom mount. I just do not like drilling big holes in the boat. If go with a transom mount then I would suggest you buy a mounting block and put it on starboard transom then mount your tranducer to it. This way if tranducer goes bad and need a new one don't have to drill any new holes in boat. I had three tranducer on my boat and each one has had a different mounting plate, all for the same Lowrance X50.

Thanks Boatist! I will have someone look at it. If I need to go with the transom mount, the block sounds like the way to go in case I need to change. I don't like drilling holes in something that floats more than I must!

Any other help?
