Depth fndr vs. fish fndr price question

I had a simple depth finder in my boat - that I just replaced with an entry-level fish finder. The fish finder does everything that the depth finder did, plus reads temp, shows bottom contour, and (hopefully) finds fish.

Both my old depth finder and new fish finder sell for around $80 - so I am curious as to why the depth finder is the same price since it does less than the fish finder, and has a much more primitive display. I would have expected the depth finder to be less...

Does anyone know why they are priced the same? Is it just an acceptable price point, and the price has little to do with capabilities?

Re: Depth fndr vs. fish fndr price question

There comes a point where you just can't go any lower, not matter what it is. If the finder cost $80 retail and that cost includes packaging, shipping, and profits for the retailer just imagine how much it cost to manufacture?

Pretty hard to offer reduced pricing on next to nothing. :D

Allot of things go into establishing a price point. While the fishfinder does provide depth and allot more data and information, it does so at console real-estate expense. Each brand and model of fishfinder has different mounting size and depth for indash installations. Windshields can become issue with console mount. A standard gauge size is easy to incorperate into a dash, and the particular use does need the extra features. I know, its hard for me to believe that there are people who don't care what the bottom looks like or if there are any fish around! ;)
