Describe locating pin in top bearing cap of 1968 pre-alpha outdrive.

On a 1968 pre-alpha out-drive ser# C2125004A the top bearing cap (with eye on top) has a round recess for a seal and locating pin. The pin is missing. Can you give the purpose of this pin and what would the dimensions be as it is no longer available. Pin part# B-17-45573 seal part# B-26-45916 The engine is a 1968 Mercruiser 160 straight 6cyl.

The out-drive is a MC1 Sorry no photo as it is in the shop waiting on finding one of these pins and or what it does. If anyone has a spare let me know.

I have a spare shaft ,is it a 8 spline ? the pin and spring enable the driveshaft to be pushed downward to set the correct gear backlash in the lower unit.

He's not looking for the shaft, he want's the pin in the top cap of the drive. Item 24 below.

never even seen one there, though never worked on anything that old on the east coast.

What area do you live in?

Is the shop your boat is at a merc dealer?

Thanks for the reply's. The out-drive is in a Mercury dealer but like one reply to this string, they had to call on one of the older mechanics to get information on this older version out-drive. The pin in question is in the top bearing cap on top of the upper half of the out-drive. A note of interest is a later version of this 1968 MC1 out-drive does not have the pin in the bearing cap anymore. That makes me wonder even more what the purpose of the seal and pin is. Is it possible that it is a pressure relief valve? Still wondering.

If you are in the united states and they are a factory mercury dealer then they should be able to find plenty of them left over if they know where to look on their dealer website.

Let us know if they can't help.
