I am hoping someone on this board can help me find a binnacle control box w/ tilt/trim and preferably key switch built-in for a 1977 Johnson 140. I have upgraded to the newer style 479 cables to accomodate a newer box, because someone said that I needed the newer cables for a binnacle style box. I am finishing up a boat rebuild, and this is my last component. I have found newer boxes, but due to system check requires to much extra stuff (adapter harnesses etc.$$$$$). I am hoping not to have to shell out big mulla on this, and will be happy with decent condition used model (pre- 96'). I have been watching e-bay daily, but have not found what I need. If anyone at all can help I would be greatful. Fishing is right around the corner, and I desperatly want to have the boat ready. If I am leaving any info out needed to help let me know. Thanks guys!!

Try Freddie Lester at Red Wing Boats. His number is 713-921-0656. If he doesn't have it he will order it for you.

Qapd

gapd,

Thanks for the lead. Are you familiar with a boat parts/surplus yard off Shaver rd. out towards your side of town? Just curious. I will call Red Wing in the morning, and hopefully they can make me a good deal on a set of controls. Anyone else who knows where to buy an older set of Johnson binnacle controls, I would be greatful to hear. Thankx again!

Jimd, you have mail.

What does anybody know about what year controls will work, and which ones wont? I have heard that the wiring changed in 96' (system check), and if you have pre-96' you need a bunch of adapter harnesses, gauges, buzzers, etc to make the newer controls work. I have the red bullet plug main harness in my motor. Is this the cable that changed? Could anybody shed some light on this subject? Maybe if I knew what to look for as far as what will work and what wont it would help my search alittle. I have found alot of "newer" controls, but the price sky-rockets once you start adding all the "extras" needed tomake it work. I have heard conflicting information, but this forum seems to have it together on the technical stuff. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!

I found one!!!! they just list OMC part numbewrs though..does anyone have a parts catalog which identifies this control, and will this work!!!!
Qoute from auction "part # 174694, which supercedes to part # 176371, but I believe the later part # is an updated design." Could this one work????

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...ry=31283&item=4515961199&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

Thanks!!!!!

Re: Desperately need help finding binnacle control box for Johnson

That control box is an older style, not made anymore, but will work fine for your application. It does not include any engine wiring harness, key switch, or anything like that. It only has the 2 wires for the neutral start switch and the trim switch.

For the engine and boat wiring harness adapters that you may need, they are listed on page 55 of the Evinrude/Johnson Accessory Catalog that every dealer gets.

Re: Desperately need help finding binnacle control box for Johnson

seahorse thank you for your reply. I have all the wiring and older control box (side mount) that was originally used. will I be able to plug my existing wiring into this control box listed for sale, or will there be additional wiring harnesses needed? That is the problem I am facing. Since I am not familiar with the wiring end of this, what appears to a good deal on a $100 control box that later needs $200 worth of additional components is not as good a deal as originally thought. The different dealers are the ones that have given me conflicting information on what I will need, so I am a little leary on trusting them. Thanks for everyones help and patience. I hate to do this, but fear I will just have to dive into this head first and just see what it costs after I am done. Any suggestions on the best way to go about this? What to ask for etc.?

Re: Desperately need help finding binnacle control box for Johnson

It is ONLY a control box on Ebay, it does not have the key switch and wiring inside it as some boxes do and there is NO room to install any. You will have to use your old wiring from the side box, and you can get the plastic plates on which to mount your keyswitch, kill switch, warning horn, on the dash - or buy all new from a dealer.

You can also look for the newer style binnacle control that has the keyswitch built in. Depending on the year, some came with a 20' wiring harness to the motor, or the 96 and later models needed the harness separate, plus you would need the adapter kit for your older motor.

Re: Desperately need help finding binnacle control box for Johnson

Hou-Chap you have mail with pictures. I don't know what year my control box is but my wiring harness is a 97 and set up for Systems Check. However, the binnacle control only has the tilt/trim switch and wires and the neutral safety switch wiring, nothing else. As it stands now I would need a separate gauge and horn for my wiring harness if I used the binnacle control that came with the engine. If mine will help send me another email. What year and design is your side-mount?

Re: Desperately need help finding binnacle control box for Johnson

Jimd,

I received your email thanks. Been out for holidays. I need to find out further if your box will work for my set-up. If it does, I will bid on your box on E-bay. The side mount control I was using is in great shape, but may be too old for your motor. It is white w/ black handle w/tilt/trim in handle and ignition on the back side. My motor is a 1977, but the original controls were replaced a few years ago for this one. I will research further if yours will work on my motor. I have all the wiring from my side mount control. I am hoping to find a control box that I wont have to purchase a lot of new harnesses, etc.. Thx for your help.
