Hello all. I'm going to check/adjust the timing on my 2002 Volvo 5.0 GL-B. It currently runs great with no pinging or back firing. It has just never been touched in 7yrs. Boat has 350 hrs. I have ordered a digital advance timing light with tach as my motor doesn't have a timing scale on the timing cover. It does have the white mark on the balancer and the V groove. I know I need to get the Volvo shunt tool (Part 885163-6). Now for some questions?? For checking Total timing, do I remove the Shunt after setting the base timing to 5-10 degrees and then check it at @4000 rpm (in the water) for @ 32 degrees of total or do it with the shunt in? Either way with the light I'm getting, sounds like all I have to do aim the light at the marks and move the up/down arrows til the marks line up and check the numbers to see where it's at.
