detailed view or directions of water pump on sterndrive 400

I have a 1985 sea sprite with omc 3.0L Sterndrive 400. Want to know how to do water pump.
I know you have to remove the whole lower unit but i noticed that the steering cable hangs and you have to hold the whole unit up but i didnt see how to remove the cable or where the water pump was. Any help would be appreciated.

The cable you're talking about is the shift cable. You have to remove it from the shift converter box at the back of the engine and feed it out through the intermediate housing. It runs into the lower gear case of the out drive.

You need to separate the upper gear case from the lower gear case to get at the impeller. The impeller housing is bolted to the bottom of the upper gear case and can be tough to pry out when you have the 4 bolts removed if it's been on there awhile.

I'd *highly* recommend you have a service manual on hand *before* doing this the first time. It's not hard, but you should know what you're doing. Even the Solec manual is sufficient (it's what I used) but it lacks detail that I think you'll want to have.

Thnaks Ben! Im pretty advanced when it comes to car engines and outboard, only worked on a few io's. Hopefully I can work on this guy.
