I was about to purchase an ob engine when I went to check the mfr hp rating on my boat(s), turns out there is no plate with this info I can find, is there another way of determining this information? My local boat dealer tells me USCG does cite for this thanks :)

[Compute: Factor=Boat Length X Transom Width]
If factor (nearest integer) is.
0-35 36-39 40-42 43-45 46-52
Horsepower Capacity is
3 5 7.5 10 15

Re: Determining Mfr HP Rating

Man I am livid after checking that USCG site on hp ratings, I have a slick 61 14' larson boat that came with a 60 hp on it, according to these instruction the highest allowable hp is 30 hp, that sucks beyond words, I cannot believe the USCG expects me to put a puddle jumper on my boat

Makes me wonder if there is a different calculation for commercial boats and home builders, I have seen scores of 14' boats with 60+ hp engines

As a survey, how many boaters have been cited or questioned by law enforcement re: the size of their engine, as in rated over mfr?

Re: Determining Mfr HP Rating

I followed their (Coast Guard) formula for my redesign/rebuild and came up with 2-3hp.

It has a 6HP now, and is underpowered.

I ran it through the German equivalent (German boat engineers) where my boat is registered and the people that certified it and gave me my hull number. They gave it a max of 35HP. I would not run it with a 35HP (just too heavy), but I did have a 18HP loaner on it once, and it seemed rather pleased at this upgrade.

I think sometimes they are way to conservative, and other times, under industry lobbing pressure (see Tournament Bass Boats) they will allow anything the big boys want.

As “tashasdaddy” pointed out, there are a lot of variables to consider other than this formula alone. It is a starting point for boat builders.

P.S. I like “ Tournament Bass Boats” :D
