Determining the Value of my 1988 Nissan NS40C 40HP Outboard?

I am looking to sell my 1988 Nissan NS40C (short shaft), with controls, and electric start (key ignition), and brand new prop. It will be taken off my 1988 Addictor 333. It runs very strong, 130 PSI on both cylinders. The only reason for selling is because I am going to convert my Addictor to a jet boat by mating part of the hull of a jet ski (where the motor mounts and the jet drive output), to the hull of my boat. I need money for this job, so I am wanting to know the value of my motor so I can post a local ad. I wouldn't be opposed to shipping it if I found a buyer out of my area. Please let me know what a fair price for this motor would be.

I do also have a electric tilt/trim that I could include if that would raise the value. Please let me know what that would be worth as well.

here are some pics:

Probably is worth nothing after 23 years of depreciation, as an opt state great engine oldie, it's better to keep it and use till it dies than selling expecting big cash and just receiving peanuts!! Try $ 800 including control box as a package bonus. Electric trim/tilt could rise the value in the event that future owner needs it. Will be good to know if important spare parts are still available. Price punishing posters probably will estimate it under $ 500

It's worth little or nothing on paper. But, as long as it runs it will still bring between $700 an $1000. That model still enjoys parts support and is considered very desirable in the U.S.

You're in Minnesota where our outboards only run for 5-6 months out of the year.. Look at the local craigslist for comparable years and conditions and you will see that you can probably get 1100-1200 for it.. I sold a 1992 model Tohatsu of the same outboard a few years ago for $1500.

A new 40C model with electric start, control box, electric trim/tilt should cost around $ 5,500 so 1/4 of it's new price would be very good priced, it's a great engine, weights 8 kilos more than the standard 30 model and has punch. Wondering why that model stayed at C when most Tohatsu are on D series ?

Wow...I really appreciate the quick and detailed responses. I come from several other forums where replies may take a couple days and the members are very short.
Because of the wide range of opinions I think I will list for $1500 and drop the price occasionally until I get some decent interest. If I can get atleast 1000 in the end that would be great money towards the 1996 seadoo XP I am looking at. If I only get 700 or 800 that is ok too. Thanks everyone, for your input!

The 40 C has been virtually unchanged, except for ignition parts, because it was/is/will be bullet proof. That model has had an almost mythical reputation for reliability and power.

The unfortunate part of it is that in MN and WI, they will look at it and say "what is that??" Little do they know what lurks under the hood of some of their newer Mercs (Tohatsus)..

Valid points....Has anyone ever seen any good write ups about this mythical motor? lol. Maybe I could link that so they understand the kind of beast they are looking at. :)

The very nice issue about the mytical motor is that has not changed through the years, just ignition parts as stated by TG to make it more reliable, engine seems in opt state and well cared for. With plenty of spare parts available, any Tohatsu lover updating to a bigger HP engine will be amazed with that 40C. Good luck!!

I had no problem when I sold mine. I did explain in the ad that these are well known for their reliability around the world and are a major supplier of Merc motors under 30Hp. Stuff like that..

I'd sell the tilt and trim seperatly. Remove the "fins" from the 40C. I'd clean it up and paint the lower unit as well.

The Nissan name will have some recognition from the car world. While getting better, Too Hot Who? does not get the recognition it diserves.

Re: Determining the Value of my 1988 Nissan NS40C 40HP Outboard?

I simple greened the whole lower unit. Its very clean, but over the years some of the paint has chipped. In the original owners manual it lists that you can buy the blue touch up paint. Would this still be available today? If so would it even look good/match? I was thinking about refinishing the top cover with new silver paint, and some vinyl decals that are styled after the original design. I just wasn't sure if I should do all of this as some buyers might think I am trying to cover something up? What are your thoughts on this?

Also if I wanted to repaint the whole lower end would it have to be separated for paint, or could I just mask everything off and paint it as a whole?

Thanks!

Will the interior look match the overall good engine condition seen outside, is engine inmaculate clean, maintains most of the crankcase paint ? Probably will need to re paint LU, specially lower tail to match Upper Unit. Masking would be the way to go for less time job.

Generally the money spent on making it pretty is not recoverable when sold.
