Hi guys. I'm in the process of completing a deal on a used boat that has a 150 Johnson OceanPro, 2000 model, purchased in late 2001.

The seller has 14 hours on the motor and did not take it out even once last summer. I spoke to his mechanic, an authorized Johnson dealer and he assured me that the motor was properly prepared when stored. I did not press him for details because he was rather surly. Lord knows how this guy wins new customers.

I plan to take the boat to a different mechanic for obvious reasons and I want to make sure that I give him all the right info.

Of course, I will explain the circumstances of the motor but I wanted to ask the group if there is anything specific that I should ask him to check and what I should emphasize in terms of dewinterizing tasks.

I understand that gummed up carbs can ruin a piston pretty quick.

Thanks,

Henry

skategoat,

If the engine runs well and the spark plugs all look the same, the carburetors are probably OK.

However, since you do not know the history (completely) of the engine a water pump replacement is in order along with thermostats. This way, you start off fresh and know what you have.

Along with that, service the lower unit.

skategoat, Just tell the new "wrench" what you have told us.He should be able to take it from there.Personally,I would not purchase this motor until I saw it operating properly. Some people 'disremember' why they stopped using a motor because there was a problem.
DHP

How important do you think it is to go to an authorized Johnson dealer?

As opposed to who? Any competent OB mechanic familiar with your motor should be able to set you right up.
