An employee at a local boatyard recently told me that they use tranny fluid to fog their customers motors. He said they can buy it in bulk and it works like MMO.Any opinions????

Really I beleive any oil will do the trick. However finding an oil that will travel to the cylinders without the sparkplugs being removed may be difficult unless the product was designed to.

And storing a boat over the winter for only one season at a time should never rust the cylinders anyways even without fogging.

Re: DEXTRON for FOGGING oil

I didn't fog my I/O but it only sits for 6 months, same with my mowers, motorcycles ect. and they all start right up in the spring, I do have an old Lemans 427 racing engine that was pickled up about 10 years ago with fogging oil along with backing off the rockers so all the valves are closed, in my OMC owners manual fogging is part of the recommended winterization.
Oh and I have heard the oldtimers talk about trans fluid poured into the carb to clean valves.

I've used dextron in Volvo car engines to free "seized" engines when the rings have rusted to the cylinder walls.

That said, I wouldn't do it, tranny fluid is pretty gnarly, corrosive stuff. Plus it burns like hell, so working with it around a hot engine is dangerous.

I didn't think trans fluid was that harsh and corrosive, I've spilled a bunch of it over the years and even mopped it up with my hair, it seems like it evaporates.

Trans fluid is thin and has lots of detergents. No problem at all with using it as fogging oil. Except it usually isn't cheaper than oil, but if the shop says they get deal on it, then so be it.
I have used it as a fogging oil before, and I have used motor oil. it doesn't really matter, as long as it's oil.

Just use fogging oil. If you can't get it, use 2 cycle oil. At least it's meant to burn. Don't use regular motor oil, it's not made to burn and it will leave carbon deposits.

That's interesting. I've always used SAE 30 motor oil. Sure gets the smoke rollin'. Maybe I need to rethink that option. Too late for this year tho.

Although any oil will work...I feel safer spraying something into the carb with a spray wand...then pouring...oil onto a warm engine...plus I think the aeresol products are formulated to stay on cyl walls and not run off during the winter....

You're right, I got it mixed up. It is, however, quite flammable. Ask me how I know!
