I bought a 175 Proteam from Tracker, and I am considering powering it with a DF 60 Suzuki 4 stroke (350 lbs). Will this weight allow me enough freeboard? Appreciate any inputs.

Re: DF 60

Alen,

Took a look at past few years of the 17' semi V flat bottom Proteam and it's rated for a Merc 60HP four (max) two stroke 70 HP max.

Will put you closer to the water line than the standard Tracker package with 25 HP, but should be fine. I would think the Suzi and Merc are both around the 350 mark.

Hope that helps

;)

Re: DF 60

Howdy, Alen.

According to the Suzi brochure the DF60 is 338lb. The Merc EFI 60 is around 250, almost a hundred pounds less.

If you want to go with the big Suzi, get the DF70, which is the same engine with different ECM firmware, but still a relative heavyweight.

I would recommend that on that boat you go for the Suzi/Johnson DF50 (233lb) or the Merc EFI 60.

There are no other EFI 4 strokes in that power class, and EFI is far superior to Carbs.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Re: DF 60

The Suzi is 350lb and the Merc is 100 less, according to the Tracker brochure the Merc 60 EFI or Merc 70 two stroke are max for this boat.

Max person cap. 4/560lbs

Max weight cap, 1050 lbs (motor, batteries, people, 21 gal fuel and gear ect)

Transom height 20"

Tracker package with 25 HP 1592 lbs

These are the published numbers in the Tracker brochure.

With a 350lb motor it may not give you the freeboard you require.

Not that a photo in a brochure should be used as specifications but loaded boat with two men and 25HP Merc the transom looks to be 8 or 10 inches above water line.

Just wanted to give you as much info from the brochure as I could.

:)

Re: DF 60

Hi, Alen. It was not my intention to contradict Capt. Ultra. The engine manufacturer and the boat manufacturer disagree on the weight of the DF60/70. It doesn't really matter. We agree that it is too heavy.

I think we agree (please correct me if I am wrong, Capt. U)that your best bet is the Merc EFI 60 4 stroke. I also recommend that you look into the Johnson/Suzuki DF50 EFI 4 stroke.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Re: DF 60

Alen, I agree with both of these guys, go with the Merc. 60 HP or other 4-stroke 50 HP, due to the weight.

You should have tremendous range if this boat has a 21 gallon tank. I would expect you to get 5 to 7 mpg (or better) on the water at normal cruising speeds.

Re: DF 60

JB,

You are correct, we do agree (the dag-on motor is too heavy) you had info and #'s I did not and I had #'s. That's what is so great about this board. If one doesn't have it all a few of us do!

I was shocked that there was a difference of 100lbs between the motors. I was glad you had that info to give Allen.

We are a bunch of old boatin pac-rats and that info always seems to come in handy to our fraternaty.

There is a four stroke motor out there that will make that light boat fly. Several options noted above.

Good luck Allen ;)

Re: DF 60

Thanks so much for the valuable information. If Suzuki, then 50. But what about Yamaha's new 60 hp? Lighter, though carbureted (less efficient, more reliable?...)

Re: DF 60

Allen,

I know nothing about Yamaha but what I've read (most very good) you would be very happy with it.

I am a big Merc fan. Have had very good luck with them and until that changes I won't.

You may want to consider the Merc 60 HP four, it's rated for the boat. I've never owned a four but have been looking.

From what I know and have read the Merc fours are very reliable and (according to Merc) "the quietest four in the industry." (?)

I'm sure others will chime in about the Yamaha, keep checking in.

Good luck

PS click for Merc --> http://www.mercurymarine.com/cgi-bin/mercprod/MercuryHome/Templates/HomeTemplate.jsp?page_id=26

Re: DF 60

Allen, I think all of us posting here will agree that either motor (Yam or Merc) will be a good choice for you, the real choice is find the right price and dealer you like.

I personally would buy either one in your situation and have no worries.

It's a good problem to have, where you win either way.

Re: DF 60

Howdy, SeaDawg. I have no problem with your recommendations, but I do NOT agree on any carbed engine when an EFI alternative is available.

EFI Merc 60 or EFI Suzi/Johnny 50.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Re: DF 60

J.B., yea, I think the carbs will disappear from all 4-strokes in the not too distant future.

I like EFI too.

Re: DF 60

Still trying to narrow my choice. Can any one of you very knowlegdeable gentlemen elaborate on the new 60 hp 4 stroke EFI from Mercury? Is it, like some other Mercs, Yamaha-cloned (a plus, im my humble opinion)?
It is a pleasure and a privilege to interact with you,

Re: DF 60

Allen,

I know that some of the Mercs fours are as you say cloned I'm not sure if the 60 is, I thought it wasn’t but if I’m incorrect someone will correct me. I've spent a fair amount of time researching motors, as I too am in the process of purchasing one.

I read a lot on this board about the different manufactures of motors and although the suzis and yammis and mercs are all high tech motors designed to be clean, high performance and energy efficient, most complaints seem to come from the foreign named motors. I don't think it's a matter of more breakdowns I think it's mfg support with warrantees and lack of parts supply in the US. They may be breaking down more, I just don’t know and I’m not going to say it just because I’m a merc fan.

Check some of the posts, there are two pages currently running on Suzuki's and all their many problems. Many current posts are about lawsuits. Check here --> http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=17&t=005987

I try to be fair, I don't bash a product just for the sake bashing it or because I don't want to own it. I think you can tell from previous posts I am fair. But I am biased towards Mercury; I said it before they have been good to me and until that changes I won't.

I have a great dealer. I know of circumstances where they did not hesitate to make repairs even when the warrantee coverage was questionable. They will deal with the paper work during and after the repair. Good dealers make for good and loyal customers and good and loyal customers make for a good and loyal dealer!

I gather from your posts you do not want a US motor and even the yammi-mercs make you nervous. Now a question for you - WHY? I hear less ranting about the mercs lately than any other motor.

I think all the manufactures try to make a good product, better than the others. They are in business to make money. It they don't have a good product or if it breaks down prematurely they don't make money and people don't come back for more.

Check out Mercury’s technical specification info, they have a section where they performed test with various motors and boats. They may have reports on your specific boat.

Merc site #1 --> http://www.mercurymarine.com/cgi-bin/mercprod/MercuryHome/Templates/HomeTemplat e.jsp?page_id=26

Merc site #2 --> http://www.mercurymarine.com.au/

Hope this helps, I know it’s difficult I just went through it. It’s a major purchase that you do not want to have to do again for a long time. On my new boat I’ll look back and see a Mercury main motor and a Mercury kicker and I’ll feel real good about it. If I could up front would be an electric Mercury trolling motor. I work for a sign company; maybe I’ll re-letter my trolling motor.

Good luck and I hope you will get some of the techs on this board to post. There are a lot of people here with much more tech knowledge than me. One more thing, “Who makes the best motor?” we will be answering that question as long as there is more than one company making motors!

:) :p ;)
