Dhadley, howdy! Mercboy here. Got my old 110 crossflow up and running. Runs like a champ on my 1800FS basstracker, turning 5800 rpm wide open trimmed up with the original aluminum 13x19 prop. (43-44 mph gps). It seems to have very subtle piston slap at idle ONLY. Is this normal for a crossflow v4? My dad has an 87' 90 xflow on his 17' BW Montauk and it doesn't do this.

Also, when I decarb this thing, would you recommend me pulling the heads and checking the bores and piston movement? I think replacing the head gaskets would be a good idea anyway. My compression is 101,103 (left bank looking foward) and 110,115 (right bank). I'm hoping a good overnight soaking of decarb will get my compression back up. Whadda ya think??? You can email me at robin119@bellsouth.net.

Thanks,

Ben

Decarbon is a good place to start. Follow the instructions on the brand you use. With some an overnight soak can possibly lead to problems. If the can says 4 hours I would not let it sit for more than that. Personally I would go 1/2 the time and do it agin a few days later.

The piston noise you hear can improve if indeed the rings are starting to stick. Some piston noise is normal for cast pistons. Naturally too much wear allows for more noise. You didnt mention if your dads motor had ever been rebuilt. If it has been and they installed forged Wiseco pistons you should not have the noise.

Yes, I would change the head gaskets and especially the 4 deflectors (322411). While you have the heads off you could measure the cylinders with a dial bore gauge. Obviously you can only measure the top of each cylinder but thats where the most wear is anyway. Dont be too overly concerned with piston rock. Unless youve looked at hundreds you may be surprised at how much there is.

Sounds like you have it set up pretty good and are heading in the right direction as far as maintenance goes.

Good luck!

Thanks Dhadley. Bought a can of OMC engine tuner today. I'm gonna inject it through the primer solenoid. On the can, it says to use 2 second bursts to start with, then 20 seconds to stalling point and soak from 4-16 hours. What is your format for injecting the stuff through the valve? Again, thanks a million!

Through the primer is the way I like to do it. I just set the motor at about 1200 rpm (or so) after its warmed up and inject until it starts to die - basicaly like the instructions say. After about a 1/3 to 1/2 can I inject until it stalls. I would let it set for the 4 hours and then restart and - this is extremly important - run it long enough to get it all out. The best deal is to go for a short ride (any excuse to go for a ride ya know!). You may need new plugs after the treatment.

Good luck!

Cool D- I'm gonna do it tomorrow morning around 10 and then go to the lake around 2 and run the hell out of it. It's gonna be about 63 here in Atl. tomorrow, so lake Lanier will be awesome! And yes, I'm changing the plugs afterwards. Thanks again!!
