I have a trim motor that only works going down. I bypassed the up trim solenoid with a short wire and raised the motor fine. I replaced the up trim solenoid thinking that was the problem but the trim up still doesnt work. The motor must be ok if I can raise it with a bypass wire but if it isnt that solenoid, whatelse should I look at? Any suggestions? Thanks again.

Re: DHPMarine, I need trim motor help

The trim unit is a motor that is reversible through "solenoids". Basically a reverse polarity switch. The throttle buttons put positive power to one of the 2 solenoids to either raise or lower the trim of the outboard/drive. The motor drives a pumping unit in a resevoir of Motor Oil (10W-30). All Mariners Ive dealt with have 4 hydraulic lines to the trim cylinders on the pivot area of the motor.

I bypassed my switch and wired my own to the trim pump. I had one solenoid out so I just had to wire one toggle switch for down. Hot wiring right to the motor////solenoid bypass
Seafood and Sunsets

CPB, On newer Mercs, the up solenoid gives 12v + to raise the motor, and the down solenoid gives 12v -.Try switching the solenoids, and if now it won't go down you'll see what I mean.
DHP

Suggest you look at trim switch and up wiring. I would check and clean all connections first. Especially the ground connection for that solenoid. Also please post motor HP and year. This helps in determining which type of trim system is involed. Hope this helps RICK

What? The switch changes the direction of current. (Trim switch)

No.The solenoids do the "switching" depending on the signal from the trim switch.
DHP

We are saying the same thing. Just different.

Re: DHPMarine, I need trim motor help

hello
what they are trying to say is onerelay provides a ground path for up and the other provides the ground path for down. if one is bad I just replace them both. if you have the control voltage to the relay and the motor will run in one direction just replace them both and the problem will disapear for a long time.
the ground side of the relay can fail and it gets confusing then. but that is how the polarity gets reversed for the motor.
good luck and keep posting
