My trim pump sounds like it's laboring both going up (1st sound) and especially going down (2nd sound). I think the "going up" sounds acceptable, but the "going down" does not. It's hard to appreciate how bad the "going down" sounds in real life when you listen to the clip. Any thoughts of what's happening here? I removed both hoses at the pump and ran each side to try to get any air out of the pump. Didn't really help.

...also, if you haven't cleaned the sludge out of the reservoir and replaced all fluid/oil in the system lately... really helped mine run better and sound less labored.

Could be brushes.

Hmmm. That doesn't sound good.

I did clean out the sludge and replaced the oil in the reservoir. Didn't flush and replace the rest though.

Just wanted to provide an update in case someone else in the future has a similar problem. I started taking the trim pump apart and quickly found that the little coupler that sits right above the reservoir and connects the oil manifold to the trim pump motor shaft was floating around in two pieces. It should be one piece. Good news: it's only a $50 part (good grief. I think gold is cheaper ). But I was lucky and happened to have a spare pump for parts lying around. I installed the "good" coupler and now the trim pump sounds great again, going up AND down.
