Did anybody else see the story about abandoned boats?

I was looking at the national news on 10-06-09 and saw a story about the number of boats that are being abandoned when owners can afford them anymore. They talked about boats being set adrift or sank. They also talked about the hazzards these boats cause. I was thinking are the large number of boats on craigslist part of this.
I guess in tuff times boats and other toys are the first things to go.

I wish people would do that around here, I would snag up a good one if they wanted to get rid of theirs. I read something about that or saw it on the news, wish they'de do that here.

I didn't see it, but I'm not to surprised either. I lost count of how many boats I called on while shopping that were way upside down. I'm still getting calls back from some guys very desperate to sell their boats, one guy was very sad when I found out I bought the same boat as he had listed for much less.

That recovery on Dirty Jobs was just hideous.

If it was the same show that I watched, the guy driving the boat said that he and his wife hit a submerged boat hard enough to put them airborne for a ways.

TERRIBLE !!!!!!!

They said that people were removing the VIN #'s and the registration #'s and letting them go !!!!!!!! :(

In some areas, you cannot just dump the hull at a landfill without paying some cash and producing a title. It is easier for folks to tow them out and sink them to get it out of their yard. A lot of untitled parts boats find their way into the bay.

If county governments would work with people to properly dispose of them without all the BS, you would see these numbers go down. On top of that, the county would save big bucks they pay these salvage companies to clean up the coast. Then again, that makes too much sense.

Big problem around Charleston, SC. Very limited local government response!

I saw the news story...... it was sad however, not on my list of the highest priority problems and really grasping for stories.
