I have a 1973 Starcraft 21'. I have a steel dual axle trailer this is rusting out that I need to replace. We use it in both salt and fresh water. I found a used aluminum Magic Tilt trailer that had a 21' boat on it so I bought it. Problem is that after I got it home, it occurred to me that the bunks looked pretty far apart. Sure enough, they are on 68" centers and I need them on about 58" centers for my boat. The bottom edge of my boat is about 70" across.

The bunks on the aluminum trailer are 2" x 12" x 10' pieces of Cypress that are mounted directly to the frame (see picture). Is there a way to make this work for my boat or would I be better off to sell this one and look for a different trailer??

Is there a guide for how far in the bunks should be mounted from the outer edge of the bottom of the boat?

I'd like to attach an icon to this message but I don't see an icon of a dunce cap...

Wow, the way those bunks are attached looks dangerous. In any case, any decent trailer shop should be able to wle on brackets in any position you specify for a nominal fee. I'm sure they make brackets that are universal so that you can bolt them onto the crossmembers as well.

Ayuh,... Unmount them bunks, 'n turn 'em upside-down, end for end...
They'll be leaning In, then move the angle braces to match...
Probably need more bracin'...

Sounds as if you need to remove the current bunks and supports, and re-do your bunks and bracing. I think Overtons sells marine trailer parts for this job. You also might could find what you need at Bass Pro Shop stores and on line.

It should be a good afternoon's job.
