I bought this 1969 evinrude 25hp model 25903, but today I was looking at it and the welsh plug on the powerhead shows 18202, witch makes it a 1972 18hp. how bad did I get screwed? or did I? they both have 22ci powerheads, whats the differance between them?

Re: did I get screwed?

The difference is a loss of 7 horsepower but a gain of 3 years on the powerhead. Very possible the seller wasn't even aware of the mix. How bad you may have been had depends on just how much you paid out. You have a legal reason to return it if you feel you've been hoodwinked.

I don"t think the seller knew, I don"t want to return it, hard to find longshafts around here that are not priced out of sight. do they use different carbs? it might have a 25hp. carb on it.

I know someone knows if the carbs are diff. it has new ignition, carb rebuild, new water pump, seems like it"s running to rich. I"m thinking the powerhead was changed but it may have the 25hp. carb. may be to large high speed jet.

No, you screwed yourself. Always buyer beware. You could have researched the engine before purchasing. You did not. Look up your carbs, you can find the year and Hp. As it is a used engine you do not know its history, it may well be putting out 25 HP. May even be putting out 28, or 30 HP. Does it start right up? and do you have a good day fishing / cruising with it? Did you get screwed??????????????? That's up to you. Not us.

Probably worth the same if you wanted to sell it. A 15hp Evinrude is worth about the same as a 25hp Evinrude of the same year.

The 18hp and 25hp are the same cubic inches, but somewhat different inside. The pistons are different, the cylinder head is different, the crankshaft is different. And yes, the carburetor. Mixing and matching can cause problems.

I'm in Modesto CA.
Usually a 15hp motor will cost you more then a 25hp motor around here or most anywhere for that matter. There are a lot of 12' aluminum boats that can handle a 15hp motor but not a 25hp.

I didn't see that you told us you had a problem with the motor!!!!!!! 15 hps probably bring more money than a 25 in some places, but I doubt that the 18s do..bob

easy to rebuild. probably just the diaphragm. i would change out the hoses too since the fp needs to be pulled.

Re: did I get screwed?

took it back to the repair shop I bought it from, he is going to replace pump for free.l He did offer me my money back, but I told him to get it running right and I would keep it. I thought it was running to rich but it was to lean because the FP wasn"t putting out good.

Re: did I get screwed?

I would think an 18 & comparable 25 would pull just the same due to the same displacement. Torque should be about the same. As outlined by F_R there were quite a few little tweaks to get 25 horses out of the 22 cid block reliably, but really those changes are about allowing the motor to run 1000 rpm higher at peak. The changes allow better breathing at peak rpms, and the crank is heavier for added durability at those higher rpms. As I said, on the way up an 18 should pull the same as a 25 but the 25 will keep going until it is revving higher. I grew up running a 1971 Johnson 25 and was impressed with how fast it was for such a light motor. Once we loaded up the Starcraft for a weeklong excursion though we really didn't see the high speed running and it pulled like an 18. A prop change could fix that if heavy loads are typical.

If your motor runs well after the fuel pump rebuild, you may as well just keep running it IMHO.

Re: did I get screwed?

yes I plan on doing just that, I took my boat out today for the first time this yr. I have a 1978 9.9 johnson on it I was suprised how much faster it is than my old 66 9.5. I usually don"t run wide open so the 18 should do plenty good.

Re: did I get screwed?

well the guy put on a new fuel pump and it runs good now. I have been meaning to ask, what is the small hose from under the head to the bottom of the intake and the larger hose that runs to the top of the intake for?
