Did I just locate my problem?

Well, after scratching my head all summer and picking the collective brains of all here, I may have found the cause of my weird temp fluctuation problem. This is a Merc 888, Ford 302, with Osco log style manifolds. The symptoms were that the temp would stay at a constant 140 at idle and would hover around 160 if I kept the throttle under 3000 or so. Anything more,a nd the temp was all over the place between 140 and 180, mostly on the 180 end. At idle, you could feel air bubbles in the hose exiting the manifolds.

As a note: before this all started, the temp never got above 160, hovered around 140, even at WOT and would cool back off quickly, took forever this summer.

The Osco manifolds have 4 drain plugs each. While winterizing last year, I installed a petcock in the 2nd hole of each to let me drain the water easily this year in case I didn't get fully winterized before a cold snap. I pulled the plugs and the petcocksout this afternoon. water came out of the front holes and trocled out the holes the drain valves were in. After prodding a bit with a piece of copper wire in the back 2 holes on each side, and the holes the valves were in, water came flooding out the all holes.

Are the passages in manifolds so small that the small bit of the valves that protruded into the cavity was blocking flow? I'll put regular plugs back in during the spring comissioning, but is there any reasonable way to check for further junk in the manifolds without removing the end caps?

That shouldn't be enough to plug it up and cause an overheat. My bet is it's a buildup of rust and corrosion. Just how old are those manifolds?
Typically when manifolds get old and start clogging up with corrosion the temp starts going up with the higher loads that higher rpm gives.

The manifolds are 3 years old, fresh water only.

Does not sound like corrosion should be the problem but it can still be clogging with silt, mud etc..There are solutions that you can pour in the manifold to try to clean it up like vinegar or a muriatic acid(diluted),salt-x.Personally I would take the end cap off and prod with a screwdriver and if you find some muck,I would remove the manifold and clean it out correctly.I would look elsewhere though.Did you change the tstat???Did you do a full waterpump kit in the outdrive???Full meaning the base and seals as well as the housing and impeller.

You could be unlucky enough to have a piece of casting in the manifold causing a moveable blockage. Time to pull both off and do the most carefull look inside of them possible. The above 3000 rpm heat variation could even be a head gasket leaking as the head heats up. Had a Honda car engine do the same thing. Different head, no problem.

Re: Did I just locate my problem?

Let me add some more to the story. Everything was just fine when I winterized last year. After getting her started on the hose this year to make sure all was still ok after winter, I pulled the carb and manifold to upgrade to a 4bbl. The engine would never run right with the new/used parts. After fighting it for a while, it ended up that the manifold I had would not seal on my motor. AT this point, I went back to the original carb and manifold to get on the water with the intention of revisiting the upgrade with a better manifold. Haven't gone there yet.

In the few times i got to run her this year, the temp would rise at anything over 3200 or so and also over this RPM, I would get a big "miss", like she would just lose power for a split second. When things were perfect, she would run 48 on GPS, before I backed her down when she started missing, she would still pull 45 on GPS, so the power loss was minimal. I can cruise all day at 3000 and she runs perfect and the temp stays below 160 where she should be.

During the manifold fiasco, I replaced the impeller (twice), base, housing and tstat (have since retried old one as well). Base timing is on the dot at 10deg BTDC. Unless my Pertronix module is flaking, I can't figure the miss out....

Sounds like you need to retrace your steps if all was fine and you are back to the setup that was fine.Hopefully nothing was damaged while running on the other parts.Charlie

Re: Did I just locate my problem?

I would start with the intake manifold gaskets.
Could be an alignment/fit problem restricting coolant flow and/or causing a vacuum leak at high rpm which would create a lean condition which in turn caused the excessive heat.

This might have been the same situation while trying to go with the 4bbl.

Just a thought. I've honked up a thing or two in my days and usually going back to the start and retrace like Charlie says is the key.

Hope ya get it figured out.

Thabks RH and Charlie. When this cold snap here in TN eases, I'll get back to it. This is what I get for trying to upgrade a perfecly running boat......

I'll buy the vacuum leak theory as possible. I put a gauge on it and can't get what I would call a steady reading.
