I BOUGHT A 1986 ASTROGLASS 175 WITH MATCHING TRAILER. THE BOAT HAS TWO LIVE WELLS, NEW TROLLING MOTOR (NOT FOOT OPERATED), NEW BATTERIES, TWO FISH FINDERS (ONE WORKS), RADIO, 1988 150 MERCURY BLACK MAX, STAINLESS STEEL PROP, INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR ARE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION.
THE REASON I BOUGHT THIS BOAT WAS THAT IT WAS IN GREAT CONDITION. BUT THE MOTOR NEEDS AN OIL MODUAL, CARBS REBUILT, TUNE UP. MY MARINA MECHANIC SAYS THAT THE MOTOR IS STRONG EXCEPT FOR THESE THINGS. THE WORST THING I FOUND OUT IS THAT THE TRANSOM NEEDS TO BE REPLACED.

- 3000 INITIAL BOAT PURCHASE
- 940 FOR MOTOR WORK
- 1650 FOR TRANSOM REPLACEMENT/PAINT ETC.
- 150 TO DETACH AND ATTACH MOTOR WHEN FINISHED
====TOTAL 5740.00

I KNEW I WOULD HAVE TO DO SOME MOTOR WORK SINCE IT WAS SITTING AROUND FOR A WHILE SO IM NOT DISSAPPOINTED IN PAYING MONEY FOR THE ENGINE WORK. THE PART THAT IM REALLY HAVING THE PROBLEM WITH IS THE TRANSOM REPLACEMENT. DOES FIXING THE TRANSOM PUT MY FINANCIAL INVESTMENT OVER THE VALUE OF THE BOAT ?

I WOULD LIKE TO POST A PICTURE OF MY BOAT ONTO THIS SITE BUT I DONT KNOW HOW. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO DO IT SO PEOPLE CAN EVALUATE MY BOAT BETTER. THANK YOU.

P.S. THIS IS A GREAT SITE !!
DOUG

Hey, you have a lot of company. Get the boat fixed and enjoy it. Old boats are full of surprises. Personally I would forget the oil module and go with pre-mix. FRED

I am sure you are disappointed that your investment has some unexpected surprises. but you could have paid even more for the boat and still had to pay for even more significant repairs. Go ahead and get the boat fixed and don't look back.

Sorry to hear of your boating problems. Can you elaborate on the transom problem? Is the glass / wood weak.

I'm interested to hear what is all involved for your $1650?

Consider this an investment in your education. You're guaranteed to not make the same mistakes next time around. In the meantime, if the boat will be what you want it to be, just fix the boat and enjoy it. I guess your other alternative is to sell it as-is and take about the same financial loss, hoping to start over with a better boat.

I post pictures by using www.photobucket.com

If the boat and motor last you another 7 years, and then you are able to sell it for a few thousand, will it matter?
Boats are expensive in the midwest. Total price isn't too bad, as long as the work was all done well and it lasts.

Heck, I see people paying $3500 for a 20 year old boat with a 40hp.

Go boating, get your moneys worth out of it. :)

Re: DID I PAY TO MUCH

straight up, the boat is fiberglass and is in great shape no cracks, dull, chips, nothing? when i noticed a problem it was when i put the transom jack on, the motor mount moved from the boat. the wood is soft were the lower bolts are.

what i get for $1650 is the transom wood replaced from the outside and the metal flake matched. the marina said i should not be able to notice the repair. and that it would be sronger than new. the only problem i have is that the outside of the boat is perfect. i know someone that is in a boating club and he had asked people if thay heard any thing bad about this marina. nothing bad only that thay do good work. thay out source the fiberglass work.

You probably paid $1500 more than the boats worth considering the problems. As for the problems, while you may want to let a mechanic fix the engine problems you can save money by doing the transom repair yourself as long as it's not cracked.

The seacast method will cost your around $400 - 500 to do the transom and you can rent a engine hoist for about $20 a day to pull the engine. One day rental to pull motor, lay down on ground or make a makeshift stand, another day to remount motor.

Total cost for transom, $550 max. A lot less than the $1650 you have listed.

Seacast webpage

The webpage has complete step-by-step directions on the transom repair.
