I'm workin on replacing my water pump on my 87 evinrude 15hp outboard, I purchased the Seloc manual which is a nightmare for me because it skips a lot of the steps for my motor and I don't know what to compare it to. Well the question I have is when I remove the lower unit. How do I know if I pulled the driveshaft out? I don't think I did but when I turn the driveshaft of the prop shaft I can feel the gears but it dosen't turn through. also, I put the new water pump assembly together and it dosen't seem to sit flush on the water pump plate. is this normal. I'm afraid to crank it down till I get some info from the Pros. I am all by myself on this one and am losing my patients with this manual it just covers way too many outboards. The fact that i'm a dumb ass dosen't help either.....Thanks in advance.....Warren P.S. just took the prop shaft and gear out and have no idea what they mean by line up the pinion with the shaft. The book is really confusing and I don't feel comfortable going any further. man is this manual worth $40.....

Yes it does sound like your drive shaft is not all the way down. You impellor has to fit all the way down to the plate. Try pulling or pushing down on the shift rod and then turning the drive shaft. It might help if you remove the impellor until you get the driveshaft seated.

hey warren from cali,

ok ill start here the driveshaft goes into the gearcase and it fits in the riges if the pinion gear. thats the gear that turns the forward and reverse gear anyways a good way to know if your diveshaft is properly sitting in the gearcase, take off the pump houseing on your water pump impeller(in case you dont know what that is its the house that goes around and sits on top of the impeller), its held on by screws anyways take that off now put the pin for the impeller in the driveshaft and put the impeller on the pin as if you changed a new impeller. the impeller should sit flush with the pump plate with the impeller pin far down enough to turn the impeller if the pinhole for the impeller sits too high then the driveshaft is not in place if so, rotate the driveshaft clockwise while pushing down untill you feel the driveshaft pop into place (that will be the driveshaft going into the slots of the pinion gear) and now your all done i hope i provided you with a detailed enough way to see if the driveshafts in place!

Hey guys thanks for the tips, I got it in, now do I need to use gasket sealer around the water pump plate? and also the lower unit? When I took it apart there didn't seem to be any residue on the leading edge of the lower unit or the shaft. Also while I have the lower unit off, Is there a way to flush the water canal that goes through the head? It looks pretty clean but it would make me feel better if I could. Another thing, without you guys to help, my motor would probably have bullet holes in it right now. I want to go fishing sooooooo bad. I purchased the OMC carb re-build kit and the thermostat. From your experience....Should I attempt it? Or should I take the other option and retire the boat for a few months and take it in.......Warren

the water pump housing plate and the lower unit doesnt get any gasket sealer on it. you take a risk of getting it into the water pump housing then into the engine.also make sure you grease the drive shaft i usually grease it with a thin coat of grease and a good ball of grease at the top of the shaft where it goes into the engine. this will stop it from rusting up.also get a service manual gor that engine they are on ebay all the time and very cheap also. i also tryed a seloc and you are right they cover way too many engines.pics are not that good eather.
