ok i had a mariner 80 1983 outboard and i traded it for 120 mec.inboard (traded boats and motors) now i have a new inpeller that was for the inboard and will it work in the out drive of the 120? i looked in the parts section and the sierra #18-3017 was the same in both units so these should be the same right,or did i mess read or looked up the wrong thing ? now a stern drive, out drive are the same thing right ? :confused:just checking dont want to make a costly mistake...what is the normal temp.range on a 120 mec.? if my gauge is right mine is showing around 150 but today run it for awhile and shut it off and was hard to start right back up,(at the dock getting ready to pull out) but did fine all other times when we stopped and it seemed like it cooled down for awhile. this was the first time out in it,and no alarms i think (been bypassed or done away with) i think????? want to keep it purring like a kitten:)

I think its the same impeller. Just look both up and see if numbers match.

Ok back to hard to start.

Was it turrning over slow or just took extra time to start?

I am not saying you have any of these problems but they are something I would keep in mind. I am assuming your engine is not hot.

1 when you shut it off junk in your carburetor can cause the gas to leak down into the engine. This will wash the cylinder walls and can foul a couple of plugs. Then the engine turns slower and has to clear out the excess gas and clear the plugs. It might start on the front and back cylinders and struggle a bit to pick up the others.

2 A warm engine is harder to turn over so any weakness in your system, battery, cables or a worn starter will put a strain on the power needed to operate the ignition and it may not turn fast enough.

3 a small water leak in the exhaust system can make it hard to turn over.

4. A weak battery can set on the charger at home and start you right up the first time but struggle with a warm engine.

The choke may be set wrong.

This is the things I would look at.

Just one to add. Ignition timing can cause a "hot starting" problem.
