I have a 1969 Mercury 800 80hp engine. I went to go change the low gear oil. I look at the manual and I see three screws. The drain screw, the vent screw and I what I believe to be the filler screww just about 1/2 in higher and 2 in. to the right of the vent screw. Undue all the screws and drain. Put drain screww back in and attempt to pump oil through top drain hole. Pressure just builds and comes back out of hole when I take oil tube away from it. I then do it the proper way and fill from the drain hole until it exits out of vent hole. Now, after I have all the screws back on, I'm seeing gear oil drain from the bottom small water intake holes on both sides of the motor. What the hell did I do and did it cause any damage. Where did I try to pump that gear oil into? Thanks for any help. I was hoping to take out the boat this weekend.
<br /><br />When you pumped the oil into the Vent/Flush screw hole you most likely filled the whole area around the water pump with oil...it will drain out around the water pick up area.<br /><br />Keep and eye on the oil to see if it turn white or gets low.<br /><br />TMD
