Did I screw up bad?!?!?!?

I have a 1969 Mercury 800 80hp engine. I went to go change the low gear oil. I look at the manual and I see three screws. The drain screw, the vent screw and I what I believe to be the filler screww just about 1/2 in higher and 2 in. to the right of the vent screw. Undue all the screws and drain. Put drain screww back in and attempt to pump oil through top drain hole. Pressure just builds and comes back out of hole when I take oil tube away from it. I then do it the proper way and fill from the drain hole until it exits out of vent hole. Now, after I have all the screws back on, I'm seeing gear oil drain from the bottom small water intake holes on both sides of the motor. What the hell did I do and did it cause any damage. Where did I try to pump that gear oil into? Thanks for any help. I was hoping to take out the boat this weekend.

:)

When you pumped the oil into the Vent/Flush screw hole you most likely filled the whole area around the water pump with oil...it will drain out around the water pick up area.

Keep and eye on the oil to see if it turn white or gets low.

TMD

What is that other hole for? I see the vent one marked and of course the drain hole. It was sealed by a plastic screww that was larger than the vent and drain screws.

Sorry, I first should have thanked you. I was freaking out over here. Also, can I use rubber o-rings to replace what o-ring, if there was an o-ring, is left on those screws? Thanks again.

The plastic screw covers a place to drain and flush the engine with. Most people just use watermuff instead.

As for the drain screws..there is an actual part for those...its NOT an oring.

19183 is the part number.

TMD

Hi Kozman,
The hole that goes to the waterpump cavity is seperate from the lower unit oil. It will eventually work through the motor or drain out and won't jurt anything. That hole is there for attachment of a flushing device that hooks up to a garden hose for flushing out the motor after salt water running. It should say "FLUSH" somewhere nearby.
Whenever refilling the unit, always do so from the bottom up, not top down. Fill from the bottom drain until the oil come out the top hole. Install the top screw to creat a vacuum so you can insert the bottom screw with minimum oil loss...
- Scott

Remove the top vent screw. Squeeze oil bottle until all air is removed and a bit of oil squirts out the top. Remove bottom drain/fill screw. Inset bottle and SLOWLY squeeze oil in until it comes out of top vent hole.Keep squeezing until bubbles stop coming out.Put top screw(AND PLASTIC WASHER) back and tighten.Remove bottle, lets a few drops drip out.. And insert PLASTIC WASHER and magnetic screw. Use new brightly coloured washers if you can. This way you can see them in the holes, so you know they haven't rolled away.
