Re: Did Ratfish find a boat?

Nope lost another. See the Next Boat... 1998 Maxum 2000 SRL post.

It's tough buying a good used boat in these parts. It seems like all the late model boats are fetching top dollar. Bad time of year I guess.

I'm not discouraged though. I'm still looking. A dealer in my area is having an open house this weekend. I think I'll stop by and see what used boats he has in his inventory. Heck, I'll even "kick some tires" on the new ones. He's got new Bayliner, Maxum and Wellcraft boats in stock. You never know... :D

I don't know where you are from in Jersey but did you ever think of checking around in upstate NY. Lots of lakes and lots of boats up here and most have never seen salt. Lake George and Sacandaga Res. have spawned quite a few dealers and many private sellers. Check Want-ad Digest.com(or something like that. Want ad digest in google). Chin up and good luck! ;)

Re: Did Ratfish find a boat?

Thanks for the advice neil2fish. I'm down by Philadelphia, PA. Up to this point, I have done most of my searching in PA because most boats in PA have not seen too much salt water (if any at all). A large majority of boats in NJ, DE and MD get regular salt-water use.

I'm about 2 hours from the NY boarder. I just came across a "lake boat" in NY I may take a look at. I have to contact the seller and get more info.

Lots up around the Fingerlakes and Lake Ontario as well. With the depressed economy here, I can't believe they're getting top dollar.
Bob

Ratfish,

Down by Philly? I lived in Cherry Hill for three months in the eighties, working for BJ's wholesale club when they opened ther. Are you in that area?

Re: Did Ratfish find a boat?

Hi friends,

Well I finally did it. I got my next boat.

I've been looking at used boats since last fall but I went to a local boat dealers open house and got a pretty good deal on a new boat. I bought a 2004 Bayliner 205 Capri with a 5.0L (220HP) Mercruiser, convertible top with side and back curtains, bow cover, fiberglass liner with carpet runners, standard back-to-back lounge seats with rear jump seats and galvanized trailer with brakes. I paid $21000 plus tax and registration. I got several glowing references for the dealer. After talking to the sales staff, parts manager and service personnel, I knew they were not BSing me. Good people.

With 4 kids ages 4 to 11 and a wife, I needed room for 6. I was on a pretty tight budget. I looked at a lot of boats. The Seaswirl Sport Boats were the most disappointing. People that knock Bayliners should take a look at the Seaswirl Sport Boats. I got in a brand new 21' Seaswirl sport boat and the floor was flexing under my feet! And this was a VEC boat. Overall fit and finish was poor. Pretty sad IMHO. I really liked the Glastron 205 but I wanted at least one back-to-back lounge seat and have no requirement for a sun pad which unfortunately takes up valuable interior space. I wanted to check out the Tahoe Q7 but the nearest dealer is over 60 miles away. That distance could be a real pain in the a$$ for warranty service. The Maxum 2000 SR3 had lots of options and looked great but at $25000 without a trailer and a tight budget, I decided to move on. The Four Winns 200 and 210 Horizon are quality boats but the interior layout seemed to be a bit tight not to mention they were priced out of my league.

The Bayliner was the best fit for my needs at a good price. Construction is good. Fit and finish is not bad for a value boat. There is some cheapo hardware but that's ok. I'll replace it with better components as they fail. I'm happy with my purchase and look forward to a great season on the water with my family.

Thanks for all your advice.

Don't worry. I'll be sure to find a spot for those rod holders. I'm already checking them out here on iboats!

Heard of unhappy Tahoe owners. I am not buying a Tahoe. You made a good choice. I Had a Bayliner 1750 for 8 years and now going to a 22 foot Glastron. Can't wait. Happy boating.

Re: Did Ratfish find a boat?

Thanks Boating Rookie,

The boat is still at the dealer. I'm going to put it in at the end of May. I got the dealer to give me a slip for 2 weeks so I want to wait until the weather is nice. Yes, the wait is killing me! Till then, I am going out in my old tinny. That should hold me over.
