Did Suzi make the mid 90's "OMC" 4 strokes?

I just bought a '96 Johnson 10hp 4 stroke engine over the phone.<br /><br />I was under the impression that Suzuki made all 4 strokes marketed by OMC as Johnnys or 'Rudes, but my seller insists that this engine was made by OMC.<br /><br />Anyone know what the truth is? Any experience with these engines?<br /><br />Thanks,

OMC made their own small 4 strokes up to 15hp. back then.

JB,<br /><br />I wasn't completely sure who made them. However I did have a dealer friend tell me that they were good and they all were thouroughly test run before they left the plant.<br /><br />OMC did not want to mess up on the launch of those.

JB,<br /><br />I believe that OMC made the low HP 4 strokes during that time period. For the mid-ranges, OMC followed a similar strategy to Mercury. They teamed up with a Japanese manufacturer. Yamaha in the case of Mercury and Suzuki in the case of Johnson. THe difference is that the johnson is truly a painted Suzuki. The Merc does have lower unit parts manufactured and developed by Mercury.

JB, I dont remember the whole story about them because we didnt deal with them at the time but I think the powerheads were made by Honda or they copied Honda. The "dressings" are all OMC stuff. Everbody said they were pretty good motors.<br /><br />Good luck!

The 8, 9.9, and 15hp 4 strokes were OMC designed and manufactured overseas for several years before being imported to the US. I understand that they were built at their Belgium and their Hong Kong plants.<br /><br />They were good running motors.
