evening folks. well, put my drive back on today. by myself even. wondering if this senerio sounds like the way it should go. it's almost like i thought it'd go. puting a 1 drive back on the bellhouseing on the boat....
-couplin grease on the drive shaft spines
-gimble brg. grease on the drive shaft orings
-big rubber gasket between gimble and sleeve... perfects seal on the outside dia.
-2-4-c all over the shift slide lever and shift slide. inside shift slide cavitiy, for a lack of a better word for it. on pilot into bellhousing. intermidiate shift shaft coupler.
-little perfect seal on oring for water passage, bellhouseing side only
lined up drive. multiple times. shift slide rotatable, an lined up, shift shaft in fwd. lined up. mated fine up to coupler. this is where i felt that it went a little out of the ordinary. was very dificult to turn prop to get couler splines lined. i did get it to turn via the prop. not much, didn't need much. drive slid on up to maybe a half inch. a couple a kicks and it was less than a quater inch. nyloc nuts pulled it in. no extra resistance felt during the final pull towards seating it..... torqued to 50 ft lbs.

as it stands now. i am mated. i can see from the couple that im not in fwd though. even though i am in fwd. i have shifted it. n to f . felt ok at the helm. it ain't right yet though. i've not approached that problem yet though... my question is about the mateing of the drive to the bellhouseing. does it sound like i'm hip. first time for doing it of course...... hense the aprehension......

today was 60+ *'s out. next week will be cold and crummy.... i got a little time....... :(

Raise the drive up, and look underneath. Is the shift shafts together like they should be? The foot of the drive shift shaft should fit in the shoe of the bellhousing shift shaft. If they aren't together and inline, something is bent and didn't match up.

its not uncommon to have to give a little extra to get the orings through the gimbal. perfect seal wont hold the drive seal in place and will most likely get turned over installing the drive, you need to use bellows adhesive and glue that sucker in so the drive doesnt catch it on the way through. if the shift fork and shoe are mated and you cant get gears up front first try by hand with the cable disconnected at the engine, if you can get gears then its probably just adjustment if not its possible the shift fork is misaligned on the splines of the lower drive. did you split the drive? if so its important to line up the fork properly when rejoining the 2 halves.

Evening Zig, Dont forget you changed your cable so if the shift shafts are lined up might be a cable adjustment aft. Sounds like your getting ready to go boating? :D

yep, the shift shafts are coupled correct i think dons.. least there together and don't look bent.....
thanks for the heads up on the big drive seal bbb..... fortunetly. i miss typed last night. i used bellows adheisive on it, not perfect seal. hope i used enough though. i was kinda sparing with it but did have a film all around..... sure hope it stayed put....
went out this morning and did a quik adj. to the cable. remote in fwd. push in on the cable and set to 6", barrel to ctr of stud hole. i've now got f,n,r. still need to see if the rest of its proper, but for now i put the cover back on and am awaiting rain and snow this afternoon.....:(
evenin..... rather mornin sns..... yep, i think i'm to the adj. part of the cable now.... hadn't got that far yesterday..... was enough to get the drive on..... got my drive stand trapped under the drive.... had it backwards.... :( had to go get my dead batt. out of the basement.... it didn't hold a charge. i did nothing to it other than clean it last fall and be sure it had water above the plates, it did..... guess i'm up for a new one.... had to charge what i had enough to operate the trim though to get my stand out from under the drive..... got it....... yep. i'm gettin closer to thinking about going boating here in the next month or so. i hope....... thanks folks...... have a great day......
