I would rather listen to Rivermouse's noisy guitar pluckin neighbor, or Kiwi Phils described, "forni-cating cats":D. I know I'm too old to be "HIP", but I just don't understand how there is much talent involved w any of it. Who plays the background music? It seems like its all digital sounds, sometimes copied, and recorded tracks that someone adds some clever words to? and that scratching thing?

I like most of the rap from the 90s. Snoop, Dre, EazyE, Gangsta Nip, Cypress Hill (big time)...I lost interest as soon as Master P came into the picture. He changed rap and I didn't like it.

These days about 5% of the music I listen to is spread between country, classic rock, metal and talk radio. The other 95% is trance. The wife and kids love it as well as a few friends. It's the damndest thing to stroll up to our campsite and see the guys with pistols on our hips, shotguns astride our chairs, passing around a bottle of rum, throwing glowsticks and dancing to live mixed trance from the Netherlands while dressed in camo. No shame here!

We get even stranger looks when the tractor door opens up at the coffee shop and the subwoofer is pounding trance....no shame.

Re: Die a death thread... Any hip-hop heads?

We were fishing Jamaca around 2002. I left the Marina in a rented motorcycle and rode to a nearby hillside restaraunt overlooking the bay. It was late afternoon and there was only one other patron. That day I drank a few beers with Shaggy, a delightful young man. He gave me over a dozen CD's to distribute along my journey.

Shaggy is Hip-Hop....so I guess my answer is yes. His song "Angel" sold me. I found the Dominicans really loved his music and would eventually sing along with me, even though they had no idea what they were singing about. I now have some seniors here at the marina enjoying Shaggy. He is the only one I listen to.....now I have an earworm. Better go spin a CD.

I listen to hip hop. I'm not as much into music in general anymore, but in the car, I need something. Lately I've been listening to Erick Sermon, Big Pun, a bunch of different guys from the SF Bay area (e40, mr. fab, old mac dre etc...), and I've gotten into Atmosphere and the slug/murs Felt albums. I'm definitely out of the "what's new" loop...

I figured people here wouldn't like this type of music though. Give this song a chance and see what you think.

I tend to enjoy music that is well produced, with good instrumentation, and an excellent singer. I've found a lot of hip hop artists that meet all these criteria. But there's a lot of stuff out there that just seems really weak to me, yet people love it.
I'm just not interested in people talking quickly over some beats on a drum machine.

That's what got my liking Atmosphere. Went to a show at Sac State and he had a dj, guitar player, and keyboard player with him (slug) rapping. It was as close to live music as I've seen in hip hop for a while. They put on a great show too.

If it doesn't get airtime on Octane I'm not really interested in it.

Actually I like the colonoscopy better because of that nice stuff they shoot you up with before. Peaceful, sort of.

Zeppelin, Sabbath, Tragically Hip, Boston, Cream, Van Halen. My grandson thinks I'm some sort of old hippy.

Usually stick with the indie genre, which is still pretty broad.

Sample from my grooveshark playlist,

Yeasayer
Built To Spill
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Crystal Castles
Real Estate
Cold War Kids
Pusha T

so, guess I kinda listen to hip hop type stuff... but generally, if it's got appeal to the masses enough to played on a radio station or something, it doesn't appeal to me.
Maybe that's a good thing. That way, my favorite songs and artists aren't overplayed to the point where I stop enjoying it.

I like Aerosmith with Run DMC (Walk This Way) and Anthrax with Public Enemy (Bring The Noise)
two very kick *** tunes!

I guess I'm an 80's metal head...

No shame in that at all! I agree for sure, mid 90's was the s***! All the 'bling' crap from the charts these days is booorrrrrrring at best.
