dies when put in gear

i have a 160 hp merc and when im crusing around for about an hour or so. and the engines is warmed up (does not over heat). when I stop and put it in neutral my rpms drop from 700 to 500 rpms. then when i put in foward gear it dies , but starts right back up. i even tried to push throttle all the way down to try to go sometime it will get more gas but it hesitate and backfires but it will go. its got new points,plugs, fuel pump, filter, distrubuter ect.... its just starting to get annoying thanks for the help.

When you put in the new points, condenser, cap, rotor and spark plugs, did you set the dwell (Gap is not good enough) then readjust the timing? Did you readjust the idle mixture?

yes the idle mixtures was set and timming is right on

Was the Dwell checked before the timing ? ? ? ? ? ?

May be carb problem, plugged filters, air leaks in the fuel system, water in the filters or carb.

What is the model number of your engine. 4 or 6 cylinder?

dwell was checked before timming. its 4.1 in line 6. the carb was rebuilt 3 weeks ago to. i had forgot to mention.

Have you done any comrpession tests or vacuum tests?

no, don't have a gauge. is it hard to do?

It is if you don't have any gauges.

no its not hard to do.. pick up the gauges at any auto store..
