You shouldn't put it into gear slowly, go ahead and pop it into gear. Those drives have dog teeth on them and require an abrupt in or out of gear throttle lever motion. You need to determin if it is running properly or not. If it's missing that my be the cause of your dieing problem. A bad lower shift cable will also cause the engine to die when going in gear.

If your tach is correct you are lugging your engine alot. WOT for your engine should be 4200 to 4400 rpm. I question your tachs accuracy because a WOT of 3500 rpm would have a very sluggish holeshot if it would plain out at all.

it planes out great i had the carb rebuilt a week ago. im changing the spark plugs this weekend to a ngk the spark plugs that i have in are black a sutty looking. i had a problem with when i went into full throttle real fast it had alot of hesitaion. and sometimes died but when when throttled down slowly it was fine. but i figured out that. what mph should i be getting out of this boat ?

whats a a holeshot

The time it take to go from idleing in gear to plaining speed.

Be sure to do a complete tune up if one has not been done in the past year or two, Distributor cap, rotor, points, condensor, spark plug wires, spark plugs, fuel filter, clean flame arrestor, check and adjust timing to specs (making sure the timing advance works properly also). And while you have the spark plugs out it wouldn't hurt to do a compression test.

Which of these are set right in between? The part circled at the top of the pic. or the two small circled parts at the bottom.

The part on top is the choke thermostat. It assist with cold start-up only. It should be adjusted so the top plate in the carb just will close when the motor is cold and slowly open as the engine heats up. If it does not open all the way when the motor is hot, (at normal operating temp) turn it to the lean side some more to open it fully.

500 rpm at idle is too low, no wonder it dies when you put it in gear.
3500 WOT is also too low, could be over propped (Too much pitch) which will lower your rpm, But before you do anything, with both low, get an accurate shop tach and check the rpm. If the tach is correct, you should be idling at 650 to 700 rpm, and your WOT rpm better be in the 4200+ range, not sure what book is for that old an engine. But it sure isn't 3500. You're lugging the engine and doing damage.

i was thinkin what don said. way too low on the idle. im assuming the carb hasnt been set right. readjust the idle to 650, then richen the mixture screws. lean out one at a time to where the idle starts to stumble then richen 1/8 turn or so. do it to both jets. then readjust the idle to 650 or 700 rpm. make sure you have a good tach. like don said. i use a hand held one that tells me exactly where im at.

it has a 21 inch prop on it but it has some chips and some small bends in it.
