I need to make a small mobile engine stand where I can work on and run a Cummins 4BT outside the boat. Have any of you ever built anything like this? I dont know how to weld so I thought I would go the wood route. The wood should also help absorb some vibrations. My plan was to use mostly 4x4's and possibly pneumatic casters. I was looking at pneumatic mainly for vibrations again but I may have to go with a rigid wheeled caster if it gets too big due to the load.

So What do yall think?

The whole engine I'm guessing doesn't weight more then about 900 pounds, probably less. It's basically a 5.9L with 2 cylinders less. Pick up a cheap 1000 pound engine stand and use it

The 4BT with a marine manifold on it weighs 800-850lbs. Just keep in mind that you would not want to start this on a traditional "stand", you would have to use a cradle. A cradle will support the whole engine front and rear. Stands typically just bolt to the rear of the engine. If your going to build something. Aside from accounting for the weight. Build something that you can lag the motor mounts down into. And support the engine from it's mounts.

Re: Diesel Engine Stand

we used to run the B's and C's on the wooden engine skids that they were shipped on all the time at Cummins

basically an oak pallet with a few oak 2 x 6's standing on edge. with a few cross braces. the motor sits on the oil pan rail on the edges of the 2x6's

a few small straps from the motor to the skid to keep it from tipping over.

in fact, if there is a cummins distributor near you, they will probably give you the skid because they have to pay to have them disposed of.
