Tie-one-on, you must've tied one on since you put diesel in your ride ! Get as much out as you can and fill up with gas and you'll be ok. Might want to run some Seafoam through it on the next gas up.

Woops, I missed the """A""" in the question.

Nope, never heard of it, but anything is posable.

Why would you want to with diesel being more than gas now???

I haven't heard of a diesel explorer. I would check and the web if Ford sells a diesel overseas. I know they put diesels in cars in europe.

Jeep has a 2.7 liter diesel grand cherokee in Germany and is now selling a 2.8l diesel liberty call the liberty CRD here. Gets 22/27MPG.

The problem is finding one that will fit and still have enough power.

It would have to be one of the new generation of common rail, direct injected turbodiesels like the Mercedes 4 liter CDI sold in most of the world but not here. It would probably cost about as much as the Explorer.

I think the Navistar, GM and Cummins engines would all be too big and heavy for that chassis.

EFHenry, go back to 2nd grade and learn how to read. I DIDN'T put diesel fuel in an Explorer, I was talking about putting a diesel engine in an Explorer. Reason why .... better fuel mileage.

Re: Diesel in a Ford Explorer

It would be complicated. There have been discussions on installing a diesel engine in a full size bronco but the consensus is it would be too heavy, the frame would not take it, nor would the conversion be cost effective. Try www.ford-trucks.com and do a search.

I have owned diesels in isuzu's (3) over the years and they were great motors. They did not have too much power but were true diesels. I know of a guy who spent the time and fabricated a jeep cj to accept an isuzu diesel and the results were a slow jeep.

If you desire better fuel mileage scrap the explorer or keep it tuned and lot's of air in the tires.

Tire pressure, driving habits, tune ups, and even empty the junk out of the back will help.

I was told by a Ford tech instructor last year that they were working on putting a diesel in the F-150 and expedition. I have also heard they are going to make the 6.0L into a 6.5L. I have a ford class tomorrow for work and will see when they are going to do it.

Re: Diesel in a Ford Explorer

Last I heard ford canceled the baby powerstroke V6 that was to go into the f150 and expedition. I was dissappointed because they were going to be available in 06 models. Looks like it's going to be a few more years before I can tow 4000 lbs easy and get 22+mpg when not towing.

The EPA has developed a ford expedition that's a diesel hybrid that shows some promise. Small diesel for ecomony and electric power boost when needed.

Re: Diesel in a Ford Explorer

the class was on the 6.0L powerstroke.the instructor said there are no plans to make the 6.0L a 6.5L but they are looking at bumping up the HP and Torque cause they don't like hearing the compitition brag they are number 1. Forgot to ask about the baby power stroke but I think Gary would have mentioned it if it was close to being done. Some neat stuff coming in the future.

Re: Diesel in a Ford Explorer

I am sure it could be done. Would have to change the wiring for the fuel/air systems, change the exhaust, change the mounts, change the tranny to start with.
The deisel has a different power range so would need the tranny re figured.
The weight would be different so the front suspension would need something done to change it. Also I think the body would be too light. My old deisel pickup vibrated too much for the body. It shook some of the spot welds loose.
The torque is different in a diesel, so the frame may be too light too.
Could be done for sure, but who knows what future problems would come up.

Hey Tie_One_On
I have a 1986 Ford Ranger with a Mitsubeashi diesel in it. It's a 2.3L turbo diesel. If you get on a website called therangerstation.com You can find out all kinds of info on these little trucks, and Explorers too. Good luck Talk to you later. Modelt4d

Ford did install turbo deiesels in Rangers in 1985 and 1986. I drove one for a while. They were peppy and the fuel economy was fantastic. They were every bit as powerful, maybe more, than the standard 2.0L gas.

Very few were made. The American public was still stung by GM's diesel debacles.

If the Explorer is older, pre 1995, the Ranger diesel would not be a hard swap. The Ranger and Explorer were closely related until about that time.
