I'm thinking about getting a new CC with a diesel inboard for offshore fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. Any recommendations on what engine to go with that is reliable or not to go with??<br /><br />Any advise will be appreciated since my previous boats all were outboards.<br /><br />Eric

At first I had a good opinion about Yanmar... Now however, after having worked on several Yanmars in many different applications I would not buy one... I suppose the mechanical/internal parts of the yanmar engines are ok, but where yanmar really lacks is in their wiring harnesses... Poor quality wire and their plug in connections are far from being water tite.. Add a little salt spray and those plugs corrode like crazy...<br /><br />I would narrow my choices down to Volvo and Cummins/Mercruiser... Both much better quality... My 2 cents worth..<br /> http://www2.volvo.com/volvopenta/gl.../powerforleisureboats/planing/diesel_inboard/ <br /><br /> http://www.cmdmarine.com/recreationalinboards.html

The local police cruiser has twin volvos in it. That thing smokes out the entire marina when it's cold. They say there's nothing wrong with them.?

I would stay away from Cummins. The B and C Series engines have been troublesome from the get go.<br /><br />Caterpillar will cost you a large premium, but they will be worth it throughout and at resale time.

For what it's worth here is my 2 cents worth. I know a guy who sells and rents the new MercPangas, one of the versions in an I/O deisel powered mercruiser. Everyone I have talked to who has operated the diesel absolutely love it, great power, speed, and exceptional fuel economy (they tell me around 3 gph at cruising speed, even though they advertise 4.5 gph). The MerPanga is a 26' boat. Here is a link to one http://www.allisonmarine.com/Apex_panga/26 Panga page.htm He sells these boats out of a dealership on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and rents them out at a location in the Bahamas.
