I was wondering if anyone knows of a diesel powered sterndrive in the 150-200 hp range for a 20-26 ft power boat.

I know there are diesels available for bigger boats ie. Volvo penta, Cummins Mercrusier... I am looking for something a little smaller.

The Volvos are beautiful! Thank you! Is there anyone out there that has one of these babies?

Can someone inform me why we do not have diesel boat engines here in North America??

I heard somewhere that the big oil companies know that Europe and Asia use the diesel fuel (lucky them) so somebody has to use up the gasoline... eg. North America...

For saftey, diesels should be the law for boats. Diesel is harder to ignite without compression.

One problem about owning a diesel is its rarity. You will have difficulty getting parts, and they are big $$$$

I completely agree... less worry about fumes, better range, more torque, what's the problem?

Re: Diesel powered

funny thing 5 out of the six boats in my area that have burned to the water line in the past 3 years were diesel.
the other was gas with twin idiots and hand tools.
google boat fire colington harbor. this was about 300 yards from my dock.
steyer also makes a real clean small diesel package.
however if I had to rn a diesel I would quit boating.
I hate kerosene heaters.

Diesels are great in certian applications...but for a pleasure boat in that size don's link showed about a 300 lb weight penalty, and this doesn't include the extra weight for an extra battery too.

Algae can form in the fuel when stored and diesels are very picky about water and contaminants in the fuel. I wouldn't want one in a small pleasure boat or anything that wasn't started every week or two and run a little.
