Anyone know of significant changes made in production models of the 25 HP 2-stroke from my current 1989 to the last produced in 2005? I am looking to upgrade to a later year and would like to know when any major changes occured. It is nice to have a 25 HP that only ways 114 pounds!
Thanks

When did oil injection start, if at all, on the 25 HP?

If you have a good, strong running 89 motor why would you upgrade in years?

The one you have it's a rebadged Yam model, should have cable throttle mechanism. The newers are rebadged Tohatsu, has rod throttle. 2 different 2 stroke horses producing same HP though.

I don't remember mercury 25hp 2-strokes having oil injection even into the 2000's. I could be wrong. I can't think of any huge advantages in engineering of a 2005 over an '89 model. Same old carbed 2-stroke........
What's your '89 model doing that makes you want to get a newer motor? Reverse gear going out? Bad idle?
Just curious,

In two months I am moving from a small lake environment to a saltwater environment. I will be on the Intercoastal and near shore Atlantic (Jacksonville) waters. My 89 25 HP runs great, but I bought it used and I have no idea how much longer it will be running great. If I could buy a near-new 2005 for a $1000 more than I could sell my current motor for, it may well be worth the peace of mind, or maybe not. What I wouldn't want in a newer motor is unreliability due to added gadgets from the factory (oil injection, for example). The Merc 20-25 is in such a sweet spot for power to weight and cost. There is probably more curiousity here on my part than actual action. Thanks for the inputs. I do like the fact that Yamaha made my motor. I spent many hours long ago on their dirt bikes, and never had a mechanical problem.
