difference between an L-drive and a normal outboard

Just like the title says, what is the difference? How would I tell if my outboard is an L-drive or not?

I think I just figured it out, L-drive must be like an I/O set-up?

Powerhead is inside the boat on an L-Drive like an inboard/outboard motor, but is an outboard powerhead like an outboard motor.
Outboard motor hangs off the stern.

Stay away from an L-drive(hell drive). They were only out for a short time and lots of trouble.Jerry
