Can any body tell me what the difference is in the different HP rated OMC stringer drives. Is it just gear ratios or is their a physical size difference? For example would a OMC stringer 400 series rated for 4 cyl engines be used with V-6s and V-8 engines if the gears were changed?

no. I believe that the 400 series used the gearcase from the V4 outboards and the 800 series used the case from the V6s.

The gear ratios in the outdrive are different for different motors.

Yes, different ratios. The difference between 400 and 800 Stringers, 400 were earlier electric shift where 800 were later mechanical shift.

Re: Difference between OMC Stringer Drives

I do not believe there is a size difference between the 400 and 800. These drives were built from 78' - 86' The early versions used a hydro-mech unit to shift gears(78'-82'?). The later years where 100% mechanical shift.
There is a difference in gear ratios in the upper gear case between the 2 and the 800 has 2 different ratios as well 1 ratio for the 305/307 5.0l (21-17) and another for the 350, 5.7l (21-16).
Also i believe the 800 used a larger dia. waterpump shaft.

The "Stringer" outdrive was an electric shift and was built from 72' - 77'. This one is completely different from the 400/800 series.
For more detailed info on these drives check out
http://www.sterndrive.info/index.html

Edit: all of these engines mount to the stringers and not the transom, hence the generic name for all three.
