My 9.9 has not tell tail stream, but there is always a weak stream of water that exits the port that is just below the motor cover.

This spritz has always been my clue that water is being pumped to cool the engine. Is there any difference (or advantage) to the tell tail setup?

A tell tale stream is easier to see from the helm and is more consistent.

The advantage to the tell tale is that it is a direct output from the cooling system (ie. waterpump) where the two ports just below the rear of the cover are not.

The tell tale is not infalible. To get added indication of an overheat condition you need a water pressure gage and a overheat alarm both found on larger and newer motors. To add to that youu need an infa red hand held temp gage. With all this stuff the best real precaution to an overheat is to service the water pump at least every two years.

You can add one - easy and cheap to do.

On the early 9.9 and 15 the exhaust releif serves as a visual indication of cooling water flow, and has the same purpose as a tell-tale. If the water is uncomfortably hot such that you can only withstand it for about 4 seconds, it's working properly. The tell tales on later models have a habit of clogging up due to the small diameter of the fittings and hose.
