Difference in electric motors

OK I checked FAQS and did several searches here so now I need to ask a question.<br /><br />This came up over coffee the other day.<br />Take two 50 lb thrust bow mounted motors made by the same company.<br />One costs 800 and the other 400 dollars. <br /><br />The answer I got was: Take a look at the size of the motor it's self. And more important the way it is made. The more expensive one will be larger in size and it has a lot more windings on it and will draw less amps. Letting you fish for a lot longer on the same battery.<br /><br />Ok Ladies and Gents.. Thanks for your time and please type slow as I don't read so fast :)

Ahoy, Link.<br /><br />I'll write slow, like I talk, so you can keep up.<br /><br />An important difference in electric trollers is the drive and control circuitry.<br /><br />The most sophisticated controllers run the motor with pulses and vary the speed by changing pulse rate and pulse duration. This technology greatly increases the time you can get off of a battery. <br /><br />They also include circuitry to monitor battery condition and display battery condition (voltage at the time) and how much longer you can run at the speed you are going before the battery is too far down.<br /><br />Finally, the best and most efficient motors use a permanent magnet rotor, rather than a wound rotor that requires brushes. A PM motor may last forever and is smaller in size than a wound rotor motor of the same thrust.<br /><br />A troller that uses a PM motor and the most sophisticated control circuitry will cost about double an entry-level troller with the same thrust.<br /><br />Good luck. :)
