I currently have a 1985 200xp evinrude and i am repowering to a 1992 200gt johnson. I was told that my old motor was rated and the crankshaft for hp, and the 1992 is rated at the prop shaft. I was told that on a big v6 that could mean around 30 hp loss in the drivetrain. Is this correct or am i being fed a line? Also what noticable difference will i notice going from a crossflow to a looper? Any difference in performance/fuel consumption? Thanks for any help that can be offered?

Steve

Howdy, Wrestler.

Your '85 was rated at the prop.

The 60* looper V6 is more efficient, smokes less and seems quieter to me.

Good luck. :)

Re: differences between 200hp motors?

OMC started rating motors at the prop in 1985 but
they didn't make a 200XP in 85. If its a crossflow then its either a 150XP or a 2.6XP. The 1992 looper 200 will have a ton more torque. If you have a 200XP made in 86, its a looper too but the bore is smaller than the 92. The 92 will have slightly more power.

The 92 is a very strong motor. Set it up right and don't be afraid of RPM's. What kind of boat?

Re: differences between 200hp motors?

Sorry, i forget that the hood on the 85 is different than the original, the 85 isn't an xp. The boat is a 20 foot astro FSX. There is a 10 inch hydrualic jackplate also. I am a little curious where to start with a prop because my old motor had lost some rpm's for some reason and had lost some power. I have a stainless 21 pitch and a 4 blade aluminum 21 pitch to try first, but i'm hoping the motor can turn a 23 or 24. What should i be aiming for on rpm's?

Thanks,
Steve
