I just picked up a 70 hp 1974 evinrude for parts especially the lower unit.. the engine on the 70 is blown, but not bad enough to scrap.. my other engine is a 65 hp 1973, After checking things out from the Sierra Cat., I see no difference in the parts, the gasket sets, rebuild kits, pump, pistons, etc are all the same, is it just the carb jets that make it different?
assistance is appreciated...

Re: differences between a 65 and 70 hp?

Hi inohv
I don't know what the exact differences are in this case, (decals is one). I have asked this question myself many times in the past. I have found in most cases like this that if you sit down with a parts manual for both units and compare item for item, part for part. Separate out and measure the parts that are different, you will find enough change to warrent the different label. Now some things you can swap and you can mix and match and often you can come out with a motor that runs well. Other times I have started projects like this, got all the way to almost there, just to realize the next part won't fit.

Not enough difference to concern yourself with.

Remember, engines before 1983 were powerhead rated, not prop rated.

Both those engines are probably closer to 55 HP, at the prop.
