DIFFERENCES BETWEEN EFI 250 MERC & 250 OPTIMAX

I´VE BEEN CHECKING FOR BUYING AN EFI MERC ENGINE FOR A COMPETITION (A SPECIAL 100 HOURS EVENT ON RIVERS IN VENEZUELA).<br />MY CHOOSE COULD BE A 250HP EFI. <br />BUT, THE PRICE OF OPTIMAX 250 IS HIGHER THAN NORMAL 250 EFI.<br />COULD YOU TELL ME SOME DIFFERENCES IN CONSTRUCTION, BECAUSE BOTH ARE 3.0L...BUT OPTIMAX REV UNTIL 6800 RPM´S ? IT IS BETTER THAN EFI 250?<br />SAME BLOCK? SAME PISTONS? SAME ECU? I do not believe there is a 250hp Optimax. The largest made is 225hp.<br /><br />The largest engine you can buy is the 250hp EFI<br /> <br /><br />The largest 4 stroke or Optimax you can buy is 225hp.<br /><br />The 4 stroke and Opti have 3 year warranties while the EFI only has one.<br /><br />TMD

THANKS TMD,<br />OK, I READ THAT MERC DEVELOPED A NEW 2004 250 XS OPTIMAX...BUT I´LL LIKE TO CHANGE THE QUESTION FOR YOU.<br />WHICH ARE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN 225 EFI AND 225 OPTIMAX...(SAME BLOCK,SAME PISTONS,SAME TOP RPM´S?)<br />OTHER QUESTION: HOW CAN I MAKE ENGINE TO INCREASE RPM´S TO 6800??? CHANGING REED VALVES? ECU SOFTWARE?<br />THANKS

The 250hp might be in developement but nothing has shown up as of yet.<br /><br />The Optimax has a better more advanced ignition system on it. The same ignition appears on the big block inboards.<br /><br />The Optimax has multipoint oil injection the EFI has single.<br /><br />The Optimax delivers a better fuel charge and better burn for more efficiency.<br /><br />Coupled with a 3 year warranty vs 1 year.<br /><br />As for getting the higher RPM out of it. You would have to see a high perf dealer.<br /><br />We are not allowed to alter the engines due to the EPA regulations.<----Mercury has informed us of this.<br /><br />TMD

The Optimax is a direct injected engine. The EFI only injects into the intake or crankcase. See WWW.screamandfly.com for everything you need for Merc horsepower.

Hello carlos. <br /> My fiance lives in VE. I have been down that way checking out marinas and looking for employment possibilities. you may wish to stand clear of the optimax. I understand they finally have most of the problems solved but some times the fuel and oil quality as well as the service is questionable. granted I only got to the higeroute and rio chico areas. Mayte lives in caracas. I would also be wary of any of the DFI type engines until fuel and oil issues in south america have been addressed. they still have problembs here with fict and HPDI as well as optimax. the 250 merc EFI is proven and reliable. take many filters and remember there is one in the vapor seperator that must be changed .and the merc EFI has no 02 sensor to give fits. good luck and keep posting. if you wish to contact me use rodbolt40@yahoo.com. if you email it in spanish Mayte will translate

Carlos, Use the 3.4 for the river race. It is a durable motor. If you are wanting to buy a new one, go with the EFI..... Less problems in the long run. The Opti's have had some problems. Most of the problems are worked out, but I would wait a while and see how they do.
